Pokemon GO PvP: How To Counter Giratina In Ultra League
Contents
Pokemon GO players who are taking a beating in Ultra League can use this guide to plan the perfect counters for going up against either version of Giratina.

Pokemon GO’s PvE Battle Raids may be the game’s most popular competitive feature, but the recently launched PvP offerings have definitely fostered a healthy community and evolving metagame. The most recent shift in the Ultra League meta comes thanks to the addition of Origin and Altered Forme Giratina. At this point both versions of Giratina are cleaning house in Ultra League matchups, so some players may be looking to up their counter plan for those match ups.
Although both forms are incredibly powerful, they certainly aren’t unbeatable. Trainers who power up the right set of counter options should be able to easily fight back against the Giratina metagame going forward. It might cost some TMs and Stardust to get caught up though…
Keep in mind that, much like the game’s PvE scene, the PvP meta will always continue to shift and self-correct as players become aware of the current popular strategies and counters (here’s a crash course if you’re new to Pokemon GO PvP). So be sure not to burn all of your Stardust and TMs preparing for Giratina when the next big bad could be just a few weeks away.
Altered Forme Giratina Counters
Altered forme Giratina is weak to Ice, Ghost, Fairy, Dragon, and Dark. With those weakness and its strengths in mind, we’d recommend these as the best counter options:
Wigglytuff – Feint Attack, Play Rough, Ice Beam
Ninetails (Alolan) – Powder Snow, Ice Beam
Origin Forme Giratina Counters
Like Altered Forme, the weaknesses to take advantage of are Ice, Ghost, Fairy, Dragon, and Dark. That said, the roster strategy is slightly different, so this is how you want to roll into these fights:
Skutank – Bite, Crunch
Tyranitar – Bite, Crunch
Umbreon – Snarl, Foul Play
There are plenty of other viable options at one shield disadvantage and even shields, but those are the guaranteed wins when played correctly in either of these match ups.
Be sure to check back for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates in the coming days. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
