When Quentin Tarantino set out to write his sophomore directorial effort Pulp Fiction, his plan was to take the most well-worn stories from crime fiction (a boxer being bribed by the mafia to take a dive, a gangster taking the boss’ wife out for dinner etc.) and then take surprising twists and turns that would subvert the audience’s expectations along the way.

The resulting movie – an anthology film whose storylines interconnect with one another – is full of unexpected plot turns and shocking death scenes, from a heroin overdose to an accidental bullet in the head on the backseat of a car.

10 Plot Turn: Pumpkin And Honey Bunny Stick Up The Diner

Like Tarantino’s previous movie Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction opens with some career criminals discussing mundane topics in a diner. Honey Bunny and Pumpkin, played by Amanda Plummer and Reservoir Dogs’ own Tim Roth, discuss the logistics of robbing a diner.

The difference between the opening scenes of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction is that the latter ends with the characters pulling out guns and sticking up the diner.

9 Death Scene: Vincent

After refusing to throw the fight he was supposed to throw for the mob, the full force of Marsellus Wallace’s criminal enterprise is out to get Butch. When his girlfriend Fabienne reveals she forgot to bring his most prized possession, his father’s gold watch, he goes back into the belly of the beast to retrieve it.

At first, it seems like the apartment’s empty and he can relax, but then he hears the toilet flush from the bathroom and Vincent emerges. Butch holds Vincent at gunpoint for a couple of silent seconds before instinctively pulling the trigger when the toaster pops up.

8 Plot Turn: Maynard Kidnaps Butch And Marsellus

After escaping from the gangsters crawling around his apartment, on the drive back to the motel, Butch spots Marsellus crossing the street with a box of donuts and some coffee. As he reaches for his gun, Butch slams his foot down on the gas, hitting Marsellus, and then crashes his car.

Marsellus chases a dazed Butch through the streets. The fight takes them into a pawnshop, where the owner Maynard pulls a shotgun on them and knocks them out. When they come to, they’re tied up in the basement with gags in their mouths.

7 Death Scene: Roger

When Jules and Vincent arrive at Brett’s apartment, Vincent checks out the briefcase Marsellus asked them to recover while Jules speaks to Brett and his friends. While Brett is speaking, Jules abruptly shoots his friend Roger on the couch and says, “Oh, I’m sorry, did I break your concentration?”

Roger was played by Burr Steers, who has since confessed that he ruined a lot of takes while his character was supposed to be dead because the loud blanks kept making him flinch.

6 Plot Turn: Mia’s Overdose

After Mia and Vincent get back from Jack Rabbit Slim’s, it seems like the main conflict is whether or not they’ll have a life-threatening affair. However, while Vincent is in the background, the movie takes a wild left turn as Mia finds the heroin in his coat pocket and mistakes it for her own drug of choice, cocaine.

She cuts up a couple of lines and snorts it, then Vincent returns from the bathroom to find that she’s overdosing. Now, his life really is on the line.

5 Death Scene: The Gimp

“The Gimp” (a character never actually named) is one of the most memorable minor characters in Pulp Fiction. He doesn’t have any lines; he’s just a man chained up in the pawnshop basement. When Butch breaks free of his restraints, he punches him in the face, knocking him unconscious.

According to Quentin Tarantino, the character died after being knocked out, because the leash around his neck attached to the ceiling acted as a noose.

4 Plot Turn: The Hidden Gunman In Brett’s Apartment

An early scene in Pulp Fiction shows Jules and Vincent waltzing into Brett’s apartment and killing everybody in there except for Marvin – or so it seems.

A later scene reveals that there was a hidden gunman in the apartment. After Jules and Vincent open fire, he runs out, points his handgun at them, and empties the clip. Luckily, every single shot misses them.

3 Death Scene: Maynard

After escaping from the pawnshop basement, Butch stops at the door. He could just leave and save himself, but he can’t bring himself to do so when he hears the brutal assault being endured by Marsellus downstairs. So, he runs through a couple of weapons in the store, from a chainsaw to a baseball bat, before settling on a samurai sword.

Set beautifully to the Revels’ “Comanche,” Butch returns to the basement and slashes Maynard before leaving Zed for Marsellus to deal with.

2 Plot Turn: Jules And Vincent Are In The Diner Stickup

The opening scene of Pulp Fiction sets the tone perfectly as Pumpkin and Honey Bunny discuss sticking up a diner over breakfast and end up sticking up the diner they’re eating in.

Then, they’re off-screen for the whole rest of the movie and don’t reappear until the final scene, which reveals that Jules and Vincent were in the diner they stuck up.

1 Death Scene: Marvin

“Oh, man, I shot Marvin in the face.” When Jules and Vincent leave Brett’s apartment with Jules’ inside man Marvin, they spend the car ride discussing whether the bullets missing them was divine intervention or just a coincidence.

Vincent turns back to get Marvin’s opinion on the matter, then the car goes over a bump, his gun goes off, and Marvin’s brains are sprayed all over the windows in broad daylight.
