Ranking Each New Super Mario Bros Game

Super Mario first bounced onto the screen with his brother more than 30 years ago. The series of classic Mario platform games began with Super Mario Bros. and continued with sequels. The Super Mario Bros. series pumped out five major entries over the NES and SNES’s lifespans, but then along came the Nintendo 64 and the advent of 3D games.

The rise of 3D pushed the franchise away from the traditional platformer. The series itself moved away from the “Bros” in its branding and switched to being a mostly 3D series under the banner of Super Mario. But in 2006, a traditional platformer bringing together the mechanics of the original and 3D entries together was released. New Super Mario Bros. ended up being a major success, starting a spin-off franchise and being partially responsible for the resurgence of the 2D platformer. But with so many games in this side series, which New game ranks supreme?

7 New Super Mario Bros Wii Coin World (2011, Arcade)

Ranking Each New Super Mario Bros Game

If you’ve never heard of New Super Mario Bros Wii Coin World, don’t worry. This arcade title developed by Capcom is one of the most obscure games in the franchise. This game was exclusive to Japanese arcades and featured four-player multiplayer. But unlike the Wii title it was based on, this game was actually mostly a slot machine.

The game must be loaded up with tokens, and then will begin spinning the slots. If the slots line up, you’ll get a chance to complete minigames like memory puzzles. If you complete all the mini-games, you’ll save Princess Peach, and the game will output extra tokens. While it’s exciting that you can win extra tokens from this game, its shallow gameplay explains why it never came west. It’s definitely not one of the best arcade games, that’s for sure.

6 New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2012, Nintendo 3DS)

Ranking Each New Super Mario Bros Game

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was confusing right out of the gate, as it was actually the fourth game in the series. It bearing the 2 in its title also drew obvious comparisons to both versions of Super Mario Bros. 2. But as the Wii entry was more of the direct sequel, this game took a different approach to make itself stand out. It decided to focus on one of the most overlooked aspects of the 2D series: coins.

Coins and gold were the big focus of this game. The maximum coin amount Mario could collect was raised to 9,999,999, power-ups were introduced that let Mario turn enemies into coins, and it also featured a new time attack mode called Coin Rush. There was so much gold and money in this title that you’d swear that Mario had become his greedy rival, Wario. The coins and the extra lives that they brought ended up unbalancing the game, making it too easy.

5 New Super Luigi U (2013, Wii U)

In 2013, Nintendo was celebrating the Year of Luigi, wherein they released several games featuring everyone’s favorite green Mario Brother, Luigi. One of these things was New Super Luigi U, a DLC level pack for the previous year’s New Super Mario Bros. U. This made a lot of sense, as sequels back in the ’80s and ’90s were often level packs. Luigi U did end up releasing standalone though, and in a package with U called New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U.

Fitting of the year of its release, Mario doesn’t appear in the game at all. Because of this, the fourth player is now Nabbit, an invincible rabbit thief. While the original worlds of the first game are retained, every single one of the levels is different. While it may not convince any skeptics of New Super Mario Bros. U, it is a quality new set of content.

4 New Super Mario Bros. U (2012, Wii U)

New Super Mario Bros. U actually started life as a tech demo for the Wii U in 2011. New Super Mario Bros. Mii was a platformer that featured Mii characters as selectable characters, which the final game unfortunately only included in bonus modes. But the other main feature of being able to play on just the Wii U gamepad did make it in. In fact, the gamepad supported a fifth player who could add elements to levels.

In terms of content, U is pretty similar to the Wii entry. It did introduce plenty of things from Super Mario World, such as Baby Yoshis, an expansive world map, and new power-ups similar to the cape. Around this came complaints that the New series was cookie-cutter became prevalent. But such complaints ignore some of the game’s most stand-out levels, such as a level based on Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting Starry Night.

3 New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009, Wii)

Ranking Each New Super Mario Bros Game

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the breakout hit of the series. Appearing on Nintendo’s extremely popular Wii console, it let people finally play four-player simultaneously. It did a lot to tickle the nostalgia of players, such as bringing back Yoshi and the Koopalings. It also brought plenty of new mechanics, like the Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit, two of the best modern power-ups.

But New Super Wii wasn’t without its issues. Players complained that the levels were balanced for four players, and were too easy with single player. The super guide that beat levels for you didn’t do much to dissuade critics who thought the levels were unmemorable. Also, the third and fourth player spots being generic Toad characters also was wasted potential. But despite these issues, New Super Mario Bros. Wii ended up being the highest-selling entry in the franchise, defining Mario for years going forward.

2 New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019, Wii U)

Ranking Each New Super Mario Bros Game

Much like the earlier mentioned New Super Mario Bros U + New Super Luigi U, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a combination of the two Wii U titles. Unlike them, however, Nintendo officially considers this port a standalone entry in the Mario franchise. And it makes sense why: this port is an incredible value. Not only does it have two games in one, but it also has new content.

In addition to the standard playable characters in the multiplayer New series, Nabbit has been made playable in both games. And another well-liked Super Mario character, Toadette, has been added to the roster with an exclusive power-up that turns her into Princess Peach. This is in addition to some minor gameplay tweaks, as the game is now on the Nintendo Switch. All of this together makes Deluxe the definitive way to play these games.

1 New Super Mario Bros. (2006, DS)

In 2006, gaming was experiencing a drought a 2D platformers. The only 2D platformers of the era were indie games, which were much less common than they are today. But then along came New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS to rekindle the genre, which went on to become one of their biggest outputs in the modern era. New Super Mario Bros. was nostalgia done right, combining elements from the 3D platforming series with the classic titles.

With eight worlds to explore and plenty of new fun power-ups to collect (like the Mega Mushroom, which turned Mario into a screen-clearing giant), the game had plenty of content. One cool part of the game that its sequels lacked was that because it reused a lot of assets from the DS remake of Super Mario 64, plenty of enemies and elements from the 3D games made their only appearance in the 2D series. It also featured plenty of minigames, which could be played with a friend through an online connection, in addition to the main game. From bringing back Mario’s sidescrolling roots to introducing reoccurring character Dry Bowser, New Super Mario Bros. has had a big impression on the most iconic gaming franchise, making it unforgettable.
