Red Hood is Finally Worthy of His Ultimate Weapon The AllBlades

This current era of DC Comics has brought big changes for Red Hood, making it finally time for him to use his most powerful weapons, the All-Blades, once again. At the end of Batman: Urban Legends #6 by Chip Zdarsky, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Scot Eaton, Julio Ferreira, and Oclair Albert, Jason Todd gave up using guns in his activities as a vigilante, citing an incident where he nearly orphaned a child from Gotham Narrows after losing his temper . Since then, he has been seen using crowbars, batarangs, and electric batons alongside his new costume in an effort to move away from using lethal force. And while Red Hood was already using crowbars before the Infinite Frontier era even started, it is time to reevaluate what they mean for him in his current trajectory. In many ways, Red Hood has been defined by the weapons that he chooses to use, perhaps more so than any other member of the Bat-Family, and the All-Blades would be a bold choice to symbolize his character growth from the past few months.

What is unique about the All-Blades in comparison to Red Hood’s other weapons is that they are powered by magic. Originally debuting during the New-52 run of Red Hood and the Outlaws, the All-Blades were forged by the All-Caste, a magical group that were responsible for much of Jason’s training. What makes them unique as weapons is that they are powered by the energy from Jason’s soul. The All-Blades’ uses and effectiveness have varied between Scott Lobdell and James Tynion IV’s New-52 run on Red Hood and the Outlaws, but the end of Tynion’s run established that they could be used only against magical foes.

Compared to his other weapons, the All-Blades are one of the only pieces in Red Hood’s arsenal that belong entirely to him. His guns are an act of rebellion against Batman’s “no guns” rule, while his crowbars are a dark reference to the weapon that the Joker used to kill him when he was Batman’s Robin. This leaves him only with the All-Blades and the katana that he used throughout the latter part of his Rebirth run. With DC making a concerted effort in Infinite Frontier to celebrate the uniqueness of Jason Todd’s character, bringing back the All-Blades would be an effective way to not only dig into another part of his publication history, but also expand his purpose within the DC Universe.

The All-Blades have a special significance because of their role in Red Hood’s defeat of Ra’s al Ghul in Red Hood and the Outlaws #27 (written by James Tynion IV, pencils by Julius Gopez and Noel Rodriguez, inks by Sandu Florea, Walden Wong, and Dan Green, colors by Nei Ruffino, and letters by Travis Lanham). Over the course of their fight, Ra’s taunted Jason by saying that he would never be in full control of himself, leading Red Hood to declare that he was done agonizing over whether or not people would ever find him worthy of redemption. Jason defeated Ra’s with the All-Blades, and the issue is a defining moment in Red Hood’s growth as an unapologetically troubled character.

The All-Blades have empowered Red Hood to do good in the past, and also move him away from his reputation as a Joker victim. Because Jason can use them as non-lethal weapons, they would be a suitable replacement for the crowbars. The crowbars may symbolize the evil that Red Hood experienced from a young age, but the story of the All-Blades points towards a more hopeful future for the character. Either way, there has never been a more expansive time for Red Hood in DC Comics than now, and incorporating the All-Blades into this new era could truly exemplify the principles of Infinite Frontier.
