Red Hood vs Azrael Are DCs Failed Batmen Heading for War

Warning! Spoilers for Batman Urban Legends #8 ahead!

While Red Hood and Azrael may have had little overlap in the comics before, the characters share some interesting similarities, the key one being that at different points, both Jean-Paul Valley and Jason Todd attempted to replace Bruce Wayne as Batman, only to fail by being too violent. It appears that while these characters have scantly interacted previously, they are now invariably heading to war with each other, leaving Gotham City caught in the crossfire.

In Batman: Urban Legends #8’s Azrael: Dark Knight of the Soul story by Dan Watters and Nikola Čižmešija, Azrael has returned to Gotham after a long time away, and returned to his vigilante ways. After attacking the gangster Bullet-Tooth’s hideout, the building explodes, leaving no survivors, save for the Avenging Angel himself. After returning to work as a hospital nurse and getting a rather unfriendly visit from an angry Batman, Azrael suits up again and patrols Gotham, only to see a zombified Bullet-Tooth roaming the streets! Believing this to be a sign that the end of days has arrived, Azrael falls to his knees in prayer and offers himself up as a weapon of the Lord.

The dead rising is definitely a sign of the end of days outlined in the Bible, but keen DC readers know that the dead rising in Gotham is something that has been telegraphed for a while now. As a matter of fact, Red Hood and reporter Deb Donovan are already on the trail of the case, as bodies are reported stolen from various morgues. Furthermore, Red Hood is slated to take the reigns of the mysterious Task Force Z, a special unit of undead supervillains tasked with eradicating the nascent zombie outbreak in Gotham. At this point, it is unclear who’s behind Task Force Z, but it is possible that, given the zombie sightings during Fear State, Red Hood is already leading Task Force Z and taking the war to the undead.

While the undead would logically be a threat to anyone with a pulse, it appears that Azrael’s Order of St. Dumas’ brainwashing and psychological programming has taken over and compelled him to see the zombies as a sign from God. Given the order’s history and how they trained Azrael, it’s logical to infer that the Avenging Angel may take a defensive stance on the undead and attempt to shield them from attempts to quell the outbreak. As a zealot, Azrael does not yield in his missions from the Order, and it appears that this one concerning the undead will be no different. With Red Hood leading the charge to control the infection and save Gotham, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before the pair cross swords.

While Azrael and Red Hood on paper share some key traits, ultimately, they will likely be put at odds with each other over the new zombie infection. As the Avenging Angel has been enthralled in his brainwashing and Red Hood has a city to save, it looks like the two failed Batman successors are heading to war for the fate of Gotham.
