Resident Evil 4 VR Trailer News & Latest Updates

Many fans of the Resident Evil series regard Resident Evil 4 as its best entry, thanks to its revolutionary story and the introduction of an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, a major departure from all previous titles. It’s been re-released on nearly every major gaming platform since it first launched in 2005. Now, players can revisit the action and horror from yet another perspective: first-person virtual reality.

RE4 is not the first game in the franchise to allow for VR; that honor goes to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which was also the series’ first game to play in a first-person perspective. While it’s not the remake fans were hoping to hear about for RE4, this is still a great way to refresh a game that’s more than 15 years old.

New Vs Old

With the remake pivoting to a VR headset experience, key aspects of the game have been changed to accommodate the new gameplay style. These include inventory management, which allows players to physically move around supplies. This also applies to the traveling merchant that Leon will occasionally come across. Puzzle minigames have been remade so they can still be interacted with. For example, one of the puzzles in the church section is now controlled via pressing buttons on a machine that changes the light colors until players form the correct shape. Even saving progress in the game is done with fully interactive typewriters, where you’ll have to press each key to name the save as you prefer.

Players have the choice of moving around either with the analog stick or by teleporting around the environment. Weapons, ammo boxes and healing plants are now physical items you can pick up. Your arsenal can also be grabbed from a holster instead of going into your inventory and selecting. Reloading needs to be done manually as well, with the ammo pouch found on the left side of your belt. Leon’s knife is also controlled by hand motions rather than pressing any buttons. There is, however, one huge change to gameplay in the form of duel-wielding, which allows Leon to hold two different weapons in each hand. He can also quick draw a new firearm if the primary weapon’s out of ammo and there’s no time to reload.

Resident Evil 4 Redux

Resident Evil 4 VR Trailer News & Latest Updates

As you can imagine, the story and characters haven’t been changed in any way, and graphics remain the same as they were when first released, while the most substantial changes are almost exclusively to gameplay. It’s worth noting, however, that this isn’t the much-rumored Resident Evil 4 remake. While Capcom has not yet confirmed the existence of said remake, it’s expected that will be more in line with the recent Resident Evil 2 remake.

Despite this being marketed as a VR title, it looks like the game is not completely in first-person. According to early hands-on previews, the camera will occasionally switch back to the classic third-person perspective, such as when traversing obstacles, vaulting through windows or climbing up ladders, as well as during special melee takedowns on enemies. It also switches back during various cutscenes, which play out just the same as they did in the original via a theatre mode.

Release Date

The VR port was revealed in April to the delight of fans old and new, and Capcom didn’t make fans wait long for the release. Resident Evil 4 VR is expected to release on October 21st, roughly six months after the announcement.

For the time being, it appears that RE4 VR is going to be an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive. It’s unknown if the game will be added to other platforms later on, but RE4 does have a history of being ported to other VR headsets.
