Rick and Morty Season 6 Confirmed for 2022 Release by Adult Swim

Adult Swim has scheduled Rick and Morty season 6 for a 2022 release. The Emmy-winning offbeat, wacky comedy originated as a short film parodying the cult-classic 1985 movie, Back to the Future. But thanks to an overwhelming response, creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon expanded it into a full series, focusing on the interdimensional misadventures of the eccentric scientist Rick Sanchez and his loving-but-miserable grandson, Morty Smith. Throughout, Rick and Morty has been praised by critics for its creative comedic style and nihilistic storytelling, with the reception helping the show to spawn a lucrative franchise comprising of video games, comics, and other merchandise.

The second part of Rick and Morty season 4 concluded in May 2020. But after that, season 5 took some time to arrive as production on the show was delayed by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rick and Morty season 5 eventually began airing in June 2021, with its 10-episode broadcast wrapping up in September. Ahead of the season 5 premiere, a sixth season had already been confirmed for the show as a part of a long-term deal in May 2018 that ordered 70 new episodes for Rick and Morty. Earlier, however, there was no indication about when the new season would air, although now it seems that Adult Swim has placed season 6 on its release calendar.

As confirmed during Rick and Morty’s exclusive panel at the Adult Swim Festival 2021 on Saturday, the show’s sixth season is now slated to arrive sometime in 2022. A specific release date, however, is yet to be announced. Although details about Rick and Morty season 6 are slim, it, nevertheless, appears that the series is now adhering to a more strict schedule, unlike previous times when fans had to wait for several years between each season.

By setting the release for Rick and Morty season 6 only a year after season 5’s debut, Roiland, Harmon, and Adult Swim seem to be living up to their promise of minimizing the gaps between the release of seasons. The multi-episode deal has enabled the creators to focus solely on the show and schedule their time around it, and thanks to that, they have been able to keep the machine going. Right now, there is no word on the episode count for season 6, but given the 70-episode order, it’s possible the new season will consist of a few more episodes than the standard 10, meaning more crazy fun, unhinged grandparenting, and wacky sci-fi mischances.

After growing its mind-bending multiverse to a colossal extent, Rick and Morty season 5 abridged the scope of its universe. The Curve and Citadel were destroyed by the Black Hole, while Evil Morty staged his return. Now, season 6 will first need to resolve the ramifications from the season 5 finale, figuring out if cross-dimensional travel is still a possibility. There will likely be some more episodic adventures in season 6 as well, the same way as there were in season 5, and it will probably only be during the end of the show that season 6 will revisit the main canon. Work on serialized Rick and Morty seasons 6 and 7 is already underway, so hopefully, it won’t be long before fans get an idea about the cynical adventures that now await them.
