Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Riverdale has a variety of characters that initially represent stereotypical high school tropes but eventually became much more nuanced and individualized. Betty Cooper doesn’t remain the meek, girl-next-door, and Archie Andrews evolves into a well-rounded young adult.

As is the case with most human beings, the Riverdale crew has their bad qualities that balance out the good, and each have things they could work on to become better individuals. No character is perfect, and their flaws add to their potential for growth in the future.

10 Reggie Mantle – Protective Instinct/Being A Bully

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Reggie proved himself to be someone to rely on between his friendships with the Bulldogs and his relationship with Veronica. He had an instinct to protect those he cared about, specifically Ronnie (after she and Archie broke up) and the Bulldogs.

However, Reggie can be a jerk sometimes and has a reputation for being a bully. He has previously bullied both Jughead and the Serpents, and now post time jump is working for Hiram Lodge, a notorious villain. He always seems to get with the wrong crowd initially, even if he eventually comes around.

9 Kevin Keller – Great Friend/Underutilized

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Kevin was Betty’s #1 best friend (besides Archie) for a long time, especially in the beginning of the series. He was constantly reliable and always cheering on his pals from the sidelines as a supporting character.

However, many fans will agree that Kevin is a severely underutilized character, which is a shame because he has so much potential. While Kevin has shown that he can be a bit harsh, the viewers still wouldn’t argue that this is his worst trait because the writing hasn’t always been consistent, and has been cast as a background character in the last few seasons. Hopefully, the rest of Season 5 gives him a lot more to take part in.

8 Hiram Lodge – Talented Business Man/Has No Morals

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Hiram Lodge has a lot of bad traits, but one of his good ones is that he knows what it takes to make a business work. He gets what he wants when he wants it, and makes deals that always benefit him. No matter who tries to challenge him, Hiram always knows how to outsmart his enemies.

However, this was where the Lodge patriarch’s weakness comes in. He has absolutely no morals. He doesn’t care if people get hurt because of his actions, not even his own wife and daughter. He also had no qualms in framing or putting innocent people in jail either.

7 Alice Cooper – Passionate/Doesn’t Think Things Through

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

In earlier seasons, Alice cares deeply about her reporting job and making sure the whole town has the truth about the various crimes going down.

As time goes on, her passion shifts to solving these crimes and murders herself. Her drive is similar to her daughter, Betty’s. However, she acts way more on instinct, which leads her to make a lot of poor decisions and disregard others feelings. Just look at the way she made Betty, Jughead, and FP help cover up the murder Chic committed.

6 Toni Topaz – Voice of Reason/Too Passive

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

When Toni was introduced in season 2, she provided an outside perspective to Riverdale and became the voice of reason, calling out the main characters’ poor choices. She was a helpful third party, and in season 5, is both a school guidance counselor and the guiding light of the group.

However, when she began dating Cheryl, she lost her voice and faded into the background a little. Although the couple is one of the most popular romances on the show, most fans would argue that Toni became too passive around Cheryl, which drained some of her personality.

5 Cheryl Blossom – Unwavering Confidence/Scarily Selfish

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Cheryl Blossom has always remained true to herself and her bright red lipstick. She never holds back and always speaks her mind, having a confidence that outmatches those of her peers. Cheryl knows what she’s good at and makes sure Riverdale knows too.

Unfortunately, Cheryl can be incredibly selfish and hardly places others first, ever. She does what she wants and expects others to do the same. This might explain why she struggles to be friends with the Core Four and connect with others on a personal level.

4 Veronica Lodge – Driven/Too Forgiving

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Veronica said it herself in the post-time-jump episodes of Season 5, she wants to be the “She-Wolf of Wall Street.” The girl has drive and is super determined, opening her own businesses and consistently striving for success.

The problem with Veronica is that when it comes to her father, she is too forgiving. He constantly belittles and berates her, making her feel small and going after her business ventures and those of her friends. Yet, at the end of the day, she always runs back and forgives him. She is so strong-willed, but always caves when it comes to holding Hiram accountable.

3 Jughead Jones – Great Writer/Super Whiny

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Jughead knows how to tell a story, he writes down basically everything that happens in Riverdale and makes it sound like a gory mystery (which it kind of is). He is talented enough to make a living (more or less) as a writer as an adult and is even recognized by readers of his work.

Jughead just can be so whiny, constantly referring to himself as a ‘weirdo’ or ‘outsider’ because of his living situation and beanie. He complains of his embarrassing family, even when they just want him to be happy and support him. Jughead can sometimes be the wet blanket of the core four.

2 Betty Cooper – Fearlessness/Kind Of Mean

Riverdale The Best (& Worst) Trait Of Each Main Character

Girl-next-door Betty Cooper has become the antithesis of original self. She used to be too scared to try out for the cheerleading squad and now she’s training to be in the FBI. She has hunted down several serial killers, including her own father, half-brother, and the Gargoyle King.

But Betty isn’t always the kindest human. She has a judgmental tendency, especially when it comes to her mother and her sister, Polly. She speaks her mind and is vivid in her facial expressions, mostly expressing her disapproval in others.

1 Archie Andrews – Team Player/Not Loyal

Archie Andrews, captain of the football team, owner of a gym, and now Army veteran is excellent when it comes to being on a team. Even during his prison stint, he brought together his fellow prisoners to experience “the epic highs and lows of high school football.”

However, many would argue that Archie isn’t exactly the most loyal person as he has been seen to place himself and his friends in awkward situations. He and Jughead’s friendship has been put through the wringer a few times because of this since Archie has ‘betrayed’ him in many ways (e.g. Southside High rally protest). He can be the alpha leader when need be but he can also turn his back just as quickly. It all depends on what is going to give him the upper hand.
