Roblox Is Holding A Virtual Treasure Hunt For Ready Player Two Release

Roblox will be hosting an in-game treasure hunt to celebrate the release of Ready Player Two, the sequel to Ernest Cline’s sci-fi adventure novel Ready Player One. The first book was published in 2011, and it received a big-budget film adaptation in 2018, directed by none other than Steven Spielberg. The film got generally positive reviews from most critics, and is broadly considered to be a fun easter egg hunt for fans keen on spotting hidden pop culture references.

In recent years Roblox was largely considered a footnote in the annals of video game history. Its critics have derided it as a low-budget substitute for more famous games like Minecraft. But the online game creation platform has really taken off in terms of success and popularity recently. Its developers stand to make $250 million this year, more than double what the game netted them in 2019. The game owes this sharp climb in success to a massive boom in player counts, as well as upgraded monetization options for players looking to make money off of the experiences they create in Roblox. The game even hosted a concert starring famous singer-songwriter Lil Nas X, and as a true token of Roblox’s recent success, it garnered even more viewers than Fortnite’s concert starring Travis Scott.

Now Roblox is featuring a brand new tie-in event to coincide with Ernest Cline’s new book, Ready Player Two. The Roblox website anticipates that this will be the biggest book tour event in publishing history, a bold claim inspired by a similar event the website hosted to celebrate the release of the Ready Player One film adaptation in 2018. That event drew in a whopping 13 million, and Roblox anticipates that this event will be even bigger. It will take the form of an online treasure hunt, similar to the ones undertaken by the main characters in the books themselves. The event kicks off on December 1st with a live Q&A between Ernest Cline himself and Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki. Keen Roblox fans will want to tune into this event, as it will feature hints that will help them navigate the treasure hunt. Apparently more hints can be found inside Ready Player Two itself, so players are encouraged to read the book in preparation when it launches on November 24th. Players who complete this quest successfully will earn free digital goods themed after the event.

This is a pretty exciting event for Roblox’s surprisingly extensive fanbase. Cline’s clearly excited too, as he has gone on record stating that “Roblox is the closest thing to the Oasis in real life, and this contest is the closest thing to the treasure hunt in my book.” This seems a bit generous; in Cline’s books the Oasis is a massive VR wonderland where players can go anywhere and do anything that their hearts desire. It’s wish fulfillment on the highest level, and it might be the case that such a fantasy is impossible to truly replicate in the real world. Roblox offers players a lot of freedom, but it’s got a long way to go before it’s on the level of the fictional Oasis.

Still, it does have a very loyal fanbase, one which will surely be thrilled at an event like this. It’s heartening to see a prominent author like Ernest Cline recognize the video game community like this, especially seeing how much video game culture is represented in his books. Roblox fans should get their book preorders in now; this event is not to be missed.
