Roku OS 10 All The New Features & Upgrades Explained

Roku has officially announced Roku OS 10 — the company’s next big software update to improve the user experience across all of its streaming boxes and smart TVs. Roku OS 10 is chock-full of numerous updates, with all of them striving to make the Roku interface faster, simpler, and more customizable.

When it comes to streaming hardware, Roku has been one of the biggest names since its debut back in 2008. Its streaming boxes/dongles are among the most affordable and easy-to-use, with a large part of that having to do with Roku’s software. Roku OS isn’t as flashy or eye-catching as some of its competition is, but it’s an extremely functional product that strives to make the streaming landscape as accessible as possible. With the launch of Roku OS 10, that goal is front and center.

According to Roku, of the biggest Roku OS 10 features that users should notice right away is ‘Instant Resume.’ It’s designed to reduce load times when re-opening a previously closed application, with Roku saying it’ll create a “much faster, smoother experience.” Only 15 apps will initially support Instant Resume from the get-go (including AT&T TV, FilmRise, and STARZ), but Roku says more are coming soon. As part of another effort to make content easier to access, Roku OS 10 allows users to more deeply customize the Live TV Channel Guide — including the ability to hide individual channels, create a favorites list, and more. Perhaps even more important for some Roku owners, this latest update also adds AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to HD Roku streaming boxes and TVs. Previously, these things were only available for 4K Roku models. There are a few smaller updates, too, though they should all make daily use of Roku devices more enjoyable. Roku OS 10 adds automatic Wi-Fi detection to more easily find the best possible wireless connection, Roku TVs can automatically adjust input settings when a game console is detected, and Roku Voice will be available on more on-screen keyboards across various streaming apps. All of this is rounded out with HDR10+ support, better visual search results when using Roku Voice, and virtual surround sound for people with the Roku Smart Soundbar or Roku Streambar Pro.

Roku OS 10 Is Available Right Now

That’s a lot to digest at once, and when added together as a single software update, it means there’s a lot to look forward to with Roku OS 10. Even better is the fact that Roku OS 10 is rolling out to users right now! Roku says that select models will get the update first, with “all supported streaming players” expected to be running Roku OS 10 within a few weeks.

While some users may have been looking forward to more drastic interface changes, Roku OS 10 seems like a smart update for Roku. Nothing about the current UI is technically bad, so while it might be getting a bit stale for certain people, there’s no sense in Roku fixing something that isn’t already broken. Many people are familiar and comfortable with the current Roku setup, and with Roku OS 10, it’s just getting better.
