RTX 3060 Ti Vs RTX 2060 Super Nvidias $399 Graphics Cards Compared

Nvidia’s RTX 3060 Ti is the newest card in the RTX 30-Series while the RTX 2060 Super was released a year before as an updated version of the original 2060, the base version in the 2000 series. Just like the RTX 3060 Ti is now priced at $399, the RTX 2060 Super comes with a listed $399 price tag. Raising the question of whether it is worth buying the cheapest version of Nvidia’s new graphics card, or the cheapest souped-up version of the company’s previous generation?

The RTX 3000 series consists of the RTX 3090, 3080, 3070, and now the 3060 Ti, priced at $1,499, $699, $499, and $399 respectively. While the 3060 Ti wasn’t unveiled along with the other three, Nvidia announced the new GPU option on December 1, confirming that it would be available to purchase just a day later. Recently, Nvidia has encountered stock issues with the RTX 30-Series, but there are retailers that still have the RTX 2060 Super available, and for around the same price as the 3060 Ti.

The specs between the two cards show some noticeable advantages in favor of the RTX 3060 Ti. Both cards come with 8GB of GDDR6 memory and 448GB/sec of memory bandwidth. The 3060 Ti edges out the 2060 Super in max clock speed (1,67 MHz to 1650) and consumes 200 watts compared to the 2060 Super’s 175. In a more noticeable comparison, the 3060 Ti comes with many more CUDA cores (4,864) than the 2060 Super (2,176). Both cards feature ray tracing, so they can provide picturesque lighting and shadow for gameplay. Deep-learning super-sampling (DLSS) is another feature that these cards share, allowing them to improve graphics while still displaying animation that’s smooth to the eye. Both cards work with displays up to 7,680 by 4,320 pixels and are known to excel at 1440p resolution, with concessions needing to be made to achieve 4K and up.

RTX 3060 Ti Or 2060 Super: Best Buy?

With these specs in mind, the RTX 3060 Ti is the more capable card overall. Even though both come with ray tracing, textures and polygons will be noticeably better with the 3060 Ti. These finer details are also what will improve lighting and shadows rendered with the 3060 Ti, as lights will be brighter and colors more or less saturated, depending on shade and other effects. So, while both graphics cards come with similar features and resolution, the CUDA cores give the 3060 Ti a graphical advantage. Games should also load and run slightly faster with the improved clock speed as well. The releases of these two cards is only sixteen months apart, but the improvements Nvidia has made are enough to make the newer 3060 Ti an easy recommendation.

Apart from slightly less power consumption, there isn’t really any advantage that the RTX 2060 Super has over the RTX 3060 Ti. In many ways, the 2060 Super is considered a last-gen equivalent. If gamers cannot find the 3060 Ti at retailers, it is still going to be better to wait until it is back in stock. If the price drops on the 2060 Super, then gamers might want to consider it, if they just want visual upgrades at a bargain price. After all, it is still a great piece of hardware – just not as impressive as Nvidia’s RTX 3060 Ti graphics card.
