Ryan Reynolds Jokingly Reveals How Old He REALLY Looks On Deadpool Set

Ryan Reynolds jokingly reveals what he really looks like on the set of the Deadpool movies. The now-43-year-old actor first joined the X-Men film franchise for 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, playing the smart-mouthed mercenary Wade Wilson who becomes the antihero Deadpool. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine strayed too far away from Deadpool’s typical comics portrayal, with the character’s mouth being removed, and fans criticized the adaptation. Reynolds managed to reboot Deadpool for a solo film series, first with the 2016 movie, then with its 2018 sequel Deadpool 2.

That was clearly the right move since Deadpool became the highest grossing X-Men franchise movie of all time, and was the highest-grossing R-rated film until Joker released last year. Part of what made Deadpool such a success was the humor in the movie derived from the script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and delivered by Reynolds. Outside of the role as the Merc with a Mouth, Reynolds’ own humor is similar to Deadpool’s, riffing on Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox’s film and TV assets and joking about why it’s taking Deadpool 3 so long to happen. Now, Reynolds brings that same sense of humor to the announcement of a new initiative he’s launching.

While introducing the Group Effort Initiative – in which the actor brings 10-20 BIPOC trainees onto the set of his next movie so they can gain practical experience in the film industry – Reynolds jokes that he looks much older than his 43 years. “I myself am actually way older than I appear on set, so you’re going to get to see what Ryan Reynolds looks like without the full beauty makeup,” he says, while a picture of a white-haired, wrinkled Reynolds appears on screen. At the end of the video, the old Deadpool image pops back up, seemingly to mock Reynolds.

Of course, Reynolds’ joke about old Deadpool shouldn’t be mistaken for the actor teasing the start of production on a Deadpool movie this fall. The movie he’s referring to that will be the first with the Group Effort initiative is the untitled time travel adventure thriller directed by Shawn Levy produced by Skydance and set to be released by Netflix. Still, since Reynolds seems to be spearheading this initiative on all his future projects, it’s likely he’ll welcome BIPOC filmmakers onto the Deadpool 3 set – whenever that starts filming. As of yet, there’s been little forward momentum on Deadpool 3 since the character and film franchise were acquired by Disney.

Last year, then-Disney CEO Bob Iger assured Marvel fans that Reynolds’ Deadpool wouldn’t be rebooted, while the same can’t be said about the main franchise’s X-Men cast. And although Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has been vocal about Disney not having any plans for the character’s next movie, or misusing the character since acquiring it from Fox, Reynolds confirmed Deadpool 3 is in the works at Marvel Studios, so the threequel is sure to get rolling eventually. Whenever Deadpool 3 does start filming, it seems BIPOC folks looking to get into the film industry will get a chance to be mentored by Reynolds, and see what he really looks like on set before all the “beauty makeup” is applied to create Wade Wilson.
