Sailor Moons Sailor Scouts Originally Had Much Different Costumes

The costumes of the Sailor Scouts in Sailor Moon have become iconic. However, they didn’t always look the way they did in the final version of the manga. Numerous adjustments were made to make them the recognizable outfits that they are today.

The Sailor Scouts are known by many names, including Sailor Senshi, Sailor Guardians, Pretty Guardians, and Pretty Soldiers. Regardless of the name the group of magical girls goes by, they are easily recognized by their sailor outfits, or sailor fuku, which are school uniforms from Japan. The Sailor Moon uniforms are different from standard ones in design and function, since they’re super costumes for fighting evil.

Sailor Moon – and its prequel manga, Codename: Sailor V – first began publishing in 1991 from creator Naoko Takeuchi. Concept sketches from these series reveal that Sailor Moon and her heroic friends went through different looks before their final was realized. Sketches published in the 1999 book, 美少女戦士セーラームーン設定資料集 (which roughly translates to “Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Materials Collection”) highlight just how different their uniforms were in earlier design phases. This Sailor Moon artbook was never officially translated to English or released in North America. While the sailor outfits were still incorporated in the final iteration, there were different accent variations and some extra components that were minimized or taken out altogether.

Initially, each Sailor Guardian had a uniform that was more individualized to them. The shoulders of each Guardian were different, though most stuck out more than in the final version. Sailors Mars, Mercury, and Venus all have protruding shoulder pads in differing cuts. Sailor Jupiter’s collar on her uniform sticks out more than Sailor Moon’s. Sailor Moon’s is the most different of all with a scalloped sleeve on each side. In the published manga, the Guardians’ outfits were far more similar, maintaining a uniform look across the group. The concept sketch shows that the skirt cuts of many of the Guardians are different than their final form, as are their bows. Additionally, Sailor Jupiter has a midriff cut top. Noticeably missing from this draft are Sailor Mercury’s boots and the nearly identical chokers each girl wears.

One of the more noticeable changes fans will note in this older version is the difference in Sailor Moon’s hair. Takeuchi had mentioned wanting different looks for Sailor Moon’s hair after she transforms, though these didn’t work out. While Usagi Tsukino – her alter ego – has remained blonde, some of her earlier transformations changed her hair to pink or silver. Ultimately, Usagi kept her blonde hair through her Moon Prism Power Make Up transformation sequence. Also absent from early sketches are the matching gloves and tiaras each Sailor Guardian wears.

The final two alterations include the change in shoewear and the inclusion of eyewear for every Sailor Guardian. The eyewear is similar to the look that was present in the titular heroine of Codename: Sailor V, who would eventually become Sailor Venus in Sailor Moon. Her look is replicated here, while each Guardian gains a mask or visor. Sailor Mercury would keep hers using it, as a sort of computer she could analyze enemies with later in the series. Ultimately, the Sailor Scouts would all follow Sailor Moon’s lead and take on the cuts of her uniform, which was largely based on Sailor V’s. Though there are numerous differences, a lot of initial designs stayed. It isn’t hard to see how the Sailor Moon Sailor Scout uniforms became not only iconic but highly recognizable in their beautiful simplicity.
