Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

While the Saw franchise may be overshadowed by its extreme gore and claims of ‘torture porn,’ there are some truly terrifying moments hidden amongst the madness. Of course, many of these moments are also traps themselves, but James Wan’s universe is also no stranger to tension and jump scares.

We’ve ranked the 10 scariest moments from the entire Saw franchise. There might well be a few particularly graphic depictions of violence to come, so be aware.

10 The Reverse Bear Trap Finally Works

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

This particular trap became synonymous with the Saw franchise. Sure, all of the traps have their own cute little names, but be honest, the Reverse Bear Trap is the only one you knew. Basically, it is a bear trap, but instead of closing in on the foot of a bear, it slams upwards into the face of the wearer.

Jigsaw attempts to use it on Amanda in the first film, before unsuccessfully bringing it back in sixth. Things get very tense when it returns for a third and final time to kill Jigsaw’s wife Jill in Saw VII, because you just know it’ll work this time around.

9 Lawrence Sawing His Foot Off

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

Not so much scary as it is tough to watch, but Lawrence’s foot-sawing has to be up there with the most challenging moments from the franchise. It’s this particular set-piece that may well be where the franchise got its name from, and it’s this action that impacted Lawrence’s behind-the-scenes actions over the course of the next seven entries of the series.

8 Saw II’s Hand Trap

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

At first, this trap may seem like another run of the mill piece of torturous aggression from the mind of John Kramer. Addison’s hands are stuck in a box above her head, clawing their way towards an antidote she can’t see, but we know is there.

Things take a horrifying turn when she accidentally loses her way out and the look on her face changes from one of determination and fear, to one of acceptance and total horror. The blood coming from her hands reflects onto her face, adding an almost Carrie-like feeling to the scene.

7 Saw VI’s Flesh Cutting Extravaganza

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

In Saw VI, we are treated to one of the most brutal traps in Saw history, simply because of the amount of direct impact the participants had to have on themselves. Not only did the trap introduce a competitive element that also (in a way) made the survivor a killer, but it forced them to quite literally cut off pieces of their own body. Watching as the realization sets in on Simone’s face that she is about to cut off her own arm in order to win is some truly chilling, teeth-grating stuff.

6 Saw III’s Limb Twisting Trap

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

Possibly the most painful trap Jigsaw ever came up with appears in Saw III. It sees the participants forced into a situation in which a rack twists each leg and arm slowly until they simply snap. Watching Timothy as his actual leg is twisted off (the gruesome snapping sound effect is particularly well placed, if sickening) makes from some really horrifying viewing. Maybe the thing that makes these traps in Saw so hard to watch is that the people involved are often pretty normal and relatable.

5 Zep Sneaking Through The House

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

Moving away from the idea of traps and into some straight-up horror, the presence of Zep in Saw misleads the viewer into the belief that he is the true bad guy when in reality, he is just being forced to carry out Jigsaw’s creepy bidding.

The scene shown from his perspective as he stalks his way through Lawrence’s house and ties up his wife and daughter is some truly hair-raising stuff that turns Saw from ludicrous exploitation of torture into a true horror film. Combine that with Michael Emerson’s impressive ability to play a creepy lunatic, and you’re onto a winner.

4 The Pigs In Saw VII

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

Saw might not be remembered for its brilliant storyline, but people tend to overlook the subplot that persists beneath each film. We saw the character of Lawrence throughout the first film, but his return as one of Jigsaw’s henchmen in Saw VII was a twist worthy of M. Night Shyamalan. The first time we see Lawrence’s true affiliation comes towards the end of the final film, as he (and two other pig-masked henchmen) emerge from the shadows to abduct Detective Hoffman. It’s a truly impressive jump scare that comes out of nowhere in a franchise not widely known for its sudden scares.

3 Saw II’s Eye Socket Exploration

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

The most graphic and difficult to watch of all of the Saw traps is almost certainly Saw II’s eye socket-centred Venus Fly Trap. This trap had certain elements of the Reverse Bear Trap in it, but the escape route was centered around (ugh) digging a key out of your own eye socket.

Watching as the recipient of this charming little device had to either muster up the courage to dig their own eye out or have their head squashed was about as intense as a film can get. It’s almost a lose-lose for everyone involved.

2 The First Appearance Of Billy

Saw The 10 Scariest Moments Ranked

John Kramer couldn’t exactly appear in person for every one of his traps, so he opted to send a replacement most of the time. He couldn’t have done a better job of choosing literally the creepiest little representative in the world, though. In Saw, we meet the little bicycle-riding puppet named Billy for the first time as he slowly squeaks his way around the corner. It’s certainly an image we’d like to forget.

1 Jigsaw Was In The Room All Along

One thing the Saw franchise did perfectly was the ending of its first film. It managed to combine its biggest ever twist, with its scariest ever moment. The whole way through the film, a dead body lays between Lawrence and Adam. The end of the film reveals that this was John Kramer, very much alive, the whole time. The chilling realization that a real, living person was in the room the whole time makes every single moment of the film up until that point a billion percent scarier. If that doesn’t constitute the scariest moment in the series, then surely nothing else could.
