Scream 5s Best Way To Honor Wes Craven Is To Kill Everyone

The best way for the upcoming Scream 5 to honor the great Wes Craven is by killing off the franchise’s remaining original characters. The slasher series navigated its share of ups and down in the years since the first installment kicked off, but the death of Craven in 2015 made many fans wonder if the Ghostface killer’s reign of terror was now a thing of the past. As a fifth film builds momentum, its directors hope to assure fans that Craven’s influence on the franchise won’t be lost.

Because all four Scream movies to date have been directed by Craven, there’s little doubt that the master horror filmmaker’s creative input will be missed on Scream 5. However, right from the start, one of the first things that new directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett wanted to make clear was their love for Scream and Craven. Their desire to honor the late filmmaker in the new sequel was reportedly part of the reason why original cast member Neve Campbell agreed to return to the role of Sidney Prescott. In addition to Campbell, the franchise’s other surviving characters – Deputy Sheriff Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) will return, maintaining the new movie’s connection to its past.

At present, it still isn’t clear just how Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett plan on honoring Craven’s Scream legacy — beyond bringing back original characters. What is clear, however, is that the task is a two-pronged one. Not only must Scream 5 stay true to what’s come before, but it must also pave the way for the sort of longevity that befits a series as iconic as Scream is. This is particularly challenging, of course, mostly because the series can’t fully move forward as long as it retains its connection to the past. How the upcoming sequel decides to solve this issue remains to be seen, but as things currently stand, it seems that the best way to move forward and honor Craven’s Scream legacy is to kill off its original surviving characters.

Craven’s characters, though very much a part of what has made Scream the success that it is, belong to Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson. Because that filmmaking partnership will never again exist, it’s better to sever their characters’ ties to future movies rather than attempt to give them new life. There’s no doubt that the characters are memorable ones, but after surviving four films, fans have no shortage of key moments to re-watch and remember Sidney, Dewey and Gale in. What’s more, killing off these characters can be done in a manner that befits or even references past Scream movies. Killing off Sidney at the start of Scream 5 in a similar opening sequence to how Drew Barrymore’s Casey was killed in Scream is arguably not only a great way to kick off the next movie, but also pays tribute to how Craven introduced audiences to the Ghostface killer 24 years ago.

A similar strategy could be applied to Dewey and Gale as well, ultimately providing closure on one era of the franchise and moving forward with another. Plainly put, by eliminating Sidney, Casey and Dewey, the series would be free to make its own rules from that point onward. The Scream sequels have all been linked to the original movie and its characters in one way or another over the years. That relationship has long felt strained. Coming up with a way to relate the killer back to Sidney has consistently been a challenge (as Scream 3 seems to prove). It’s arguable, in fact, that the past two Scream sequels would have been better served by the ability to explore a new angle.

As long as the Ghostface killer is able to stalk unsuspecting teens—often while referencing classic horror movies—then it’s safe to say that current fans will remain loyal. No Scream film is ever going to be made in the same way that Craven once did it, so it seems that the time to experiment with the franchise is now. Perhaps that is exactly what Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have planned for Scream 5. If it is, the franchise could be about to release its single most important entry come winter 2022.
