Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones always had her heart in the right place and loved her friends, but she didn’t always give them the best advice.

If there’s one television icon’s name that been on everyone’s lips lately, it’s Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones. The confident and headstrong public relations powerhouse won’t be joining Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte when the newly announced series revival And Just Like That… premieres on HBO Max in 2022. Actress, Kim Cattrall, who originated the role in 1998, has made it publicly known that she is not interested in returning, which has caused quite a buzz with fans speculating what’ll become of the beloved Jones.

No matter the outcome, Samantha will always be credited for her fiery, liberated and bold personality and her memorable words of (sometimes questionable) wisdom.

10 Worst: Carrie’s Book Cover

In this instance, both Carrie and Samantha were in the wrong. When the two collaborate on the PR for Carrie’s first book, they butt heads over their different visions for the cover. After accidentally walking in on Samantha with a delivery guy, Carrie begins to shame her friend for her behavior.

The tension between the two implodes when Samantha pressures Carrie into wearing lingerie for the photoshoot. In the end, the pair resolve their issues and choose a book cover that captures both Carrie and Samantha’s style and personality.

Samantha has, for the most part, been a good reader of character, especially when it comes to sniffing out the duds that her friends date. When Carrie starts dating a man-child by the name of Wade, Samantha is there to set her on the right path by telling her to cut him loose ASAP.

As it turns out, Carrie comes to her senses and realizes that Wade is lacking the maturity chip, and realizes that she should have heeded Samantha’s advice sooner.

8 Worst: “Why Do You Care?”

After Carrie announces that she might be moving to Paris with Aleksandr, her friends question her decision. Carrie, frustrated, confides in Samantha, who seems to be the only one who is genuinely happy for her. Never one to conform, Samantha asks her, “Have you ever heard me once ask what anybody thinks about my boyfriend?”

While this might be good advice in a different scenario, in this case, Samantha ignores all the red flags that show how Alek isn’t a good match for Carrie and she nudges her closer to making the ill-fated decision to uproot her life for him.

7 Best: “Honey, You’re A Model”

Samantha is always armed with two things: an opinion and a compliment. She knows the power of what a confidence boost can do and that supporting your fellow female can make a real impact.

In season 4, when Carrie is invited to walk in New York Fashion Week, her revealing costume leaves her in a panic. It’s Samantha to the rescue with four simple words that save the day. Her pep talk boosts Carrie and gives her enough confidence to strut her stuff, and even get back up after taking a spill on the runway.

6 Worst: “You’re A Free Agent”

Out of all four SATC women, Samantha is probably the best person to confide in. When Carries reveals her affair with Big to Samantha, she does a few things right: she doesn’t judge her, she makes good on her promise to keep it a secret and she doesn’t offer any unsolicited advice until she’s asked.

While Samantha earns praise for her non-judgemental attitude, her advice that Carrie is a “free agent” and owes nothing to Aidan simply because he hasn’t said “I love you” yet is troubling. Rather than helping her, she makes up excuses for Carrie’s infidelity, chalking it all up to “pheromones” and basically grants her permission to continue the affair.

5 Best: “You Need To Chill The F*** Out And Hire Yourself A Stylist”

Overwhelmed with the stress of planning her wedding, bride-to-be, Charlotte, recruits her friends to help her make some important decisions. At the height of her panic, Samantha tells her to hire “some little minion to run around town and do your dress bidding.” While her advice is abrasive and blunt, what results is Charlotte hiring stylist, Anthony Marantino.

Marantino is a fan-favorite of SATC fans and is known for both his bite and bark. With his quick wit and bluntness, it’s hard to imagine SATC without him and we can all thank Samantha for that.

4 Worst: The 30 Under 30 Party

Just when it seemed like no one could get Samantha to settle down, aspiring actor Smith Jerrod comes along and flips her commitment to being non-committal upside down. When Jerrod asks her about an invite to a 30 under 30 party, she advises him to go under the pretense that’ll it’ll be good for his career, when in reality, she’s using the invite as an excuse to see her ex, Richard Wright.

She ends up cheating on him during the party, but the ever-loyal Smith forgives her and the two agree to become a couple. This moment solidifies their relationship, but it’s hard to watch Samantha take advantage of his naïvity for her own agenda.

3 Best: “You Have An Appointment”

If there are two things that don’t mix, it’s Samantha Jones and babies. As she watches Miranda and Charlotte become mothers, it’s very clear that while she tolerates children, she has no interest in them.

Eventually, Carrie brings it to Samantha’s attention that she’s been neglectful towards Miranda since she gave birth. She ends up extending an olive branch by giving up a coveted hair appointment to Miranda and even offers to babysit Brady. Although she can be self-centered at times, this is proof that if Samantha Jones is going to put anything before herself, it’s going to be her friends.

2 Worst: “Sometimes, For The Right Guy, You Have To Make Concessions.”

When Carrie starts dating politician, Bill Kelley, he asks her to perform an intimate act that she is uncomfortable with. Samantha advises her to go through the request because, “He’s a great looking, rich, political prince”.

Although Carrie laughs it off, this advice is, in no way, a laughing manner. Her advice that someone should comply to an act that makes them uncomfortable to please a partner is problematic. To make matters worse, the person in question is her best friend and this proves that this moment is not Samantha’s finest hour.

1 Best: “Listen To Me. The Right Guy Is An Illusion. Start Living Your Lives.”

In the pilot episode of SATC, Samantha drops this truth bomb on her friends and sets up the thesis of the series. It seems that Carrie and Charlotte, especially, are consumed by the idea that they needed a man to be happy and her statement forces them to confront their objectives.

While the foursome didn’t always follow her advice, Samantha sticks by her philosophy that dating is supposed to be fun and that finding the perfect man isn’t the be all, end all.
