Skyrim How to Adopt a Child

Adopting children is a minor yet unique feature in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that adds to the game’s already deep and immersive gameplay. While children don’t provide any significant benefits, their presence can add a layer of emotional comfort to a player’s home, especially when coupled with a married spouse. Marriage is not required to adopt children, and players can have up to two kids in their Skyrim house. The Elder Scrolls V, along with its Hearthfire DLC, offers a total of 23 adoptable children; however, not all of them are available to adopt from the start.

Players can play games with their children, give them gifts, or have them do house chores. Sometimes, adopted kids will even bring their Dragonborn parents a present. Such interactions build immersion and grant players the Gift of Charity bonus, which fortifies Persuasion for an hour. Additionally, if players sleep in the home where their children live, they will receive the Mother’s Love or Father’s Love bonus, which will boost restoration spells and healing potions. However, these effects will not activate if the player is a Werewolf in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Owning a home is the first step in adopting a child in Skyrim. If a vagabond player attempts to take in a homeless boy or girl, they will not be able to complete the dialogue for adoption. Once players obtain a home, they must have an additional bed for the child. For purchased homes, speak to the Jarl’s steward to expand the house with a child’s bedroom. On the other hand, for homes obtained or built by the player like in the Hearthfire DLC, construct a Single Bed and a Dresser. Once Skyrim players have procured a house modeled with the mentioned requirements, they can move on to adopting a child.

Adopting Children in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The first set of children that players can adopt are located in the Honorhall Orphanage of Riften. These orphans can be taken in only after players have completed “Innocence Lost,” the quest in which the wretched Grelod the Kind is killed. After Grelod is dead, the Dragonborn will receive a letter saying Constance Michel has taken over the orphanage, allowing the children to be up for adoption.

Homeless children can also be found roaming within select cities in Skyrim. To adopt them, begin a dialogue with them and ask them about their unfortunate past.

Finally, there are 15 additional children that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Dragonborn can adopt. These children are not available for adoption from the start but will be sent to the Honorhall Orphanage if their parents die.
