Michael Rosenbaum brilliantly portrayed Superman’s arch-nemesis in Smallville from 2006 to 2011. Granted, Lex was absent during the show’s eighth and ninth seasons due to Rosenbaum wanting to advance his acting career, but this didn’t diminish the character’s impact on Superman’s early years. In the last decade, fans have also seen Jon Cryer and Jesse Eisenberg play the role but they couldn’t hold a candle to Rosenbaum’s take on the iconic villain.

Smallville focused on the early years of Clark Kent and Lex’s friendship, where Lex was not always the villain he was destined to become. There were seemingly other plans for Lex after the show’s final season, but these were rejected by Warner Brothers. Lex certainly had his redeeming moments in the show but by the nature of his character, there were, of course, times when fans were supposed to hate him. Here are five times fans were rooting for Lex on the show and another five times they definitely rooted for the other side.

10 FELT BAD FOR LEX: When He Was Deserted On An Island

In Season 3, Lex managed to survive the plane crash orchestrated by his new wife Helen. While he was on this island (which is coincidentally similar to the Oliver Queen/Green Arrow origin story), Lex was essentially hunted by Louis Leery. Lex managed to overpower and kill his hunter, only to learn that it was a hallucination and the result of a mental breakdown.

Helen is now out in the world with a decent apart of the Luthor fortune and Lex is stranded on an island, where he’s forced to trade in silver cutlery for bugs in the forest with no immediate sense of rescue.

9 HATED LEX: When He Tortured Impulse

In Season 6’s eleventh episode ‘Justice,’ Lex captures Impulse/Bart Allen when the speedster tries to gather information about 33.1 – Lex’s center for experimenting on people with meteor abilities.

Lex puts Bart in a speed chamber which will explode the moment Bart stops running, forcing him to constantly run as fast as he can for survival. Clark manages to rescue Bart in time and protect him from the blast but Lex torturing a kid in this way, even with super speed, definitely turned fans against him, if they weren’t already.

8 FELT BAD FOR LEX: When Clark Trashed His Engagement Party

In season 6’s thirteenth episode ‘Crimson,’ Clark – under the influence of red Kryptonite – and Lois crash Lex and Lana’s engagement party where not only did Clark throw Lex into a standing champagne glass tower, he also reveals that Lana is pregnant with Lex’s baby.

What was supposed to be an enjoyable evening for Lex and Lana turned into a nightmare thanks to red Kryptonite.

7 HATED LEX: When He Tried To Kill Clark

Smallville 5 Times We Felt Bad For Lex Luthor (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

In the finale of Season 7, Lex figures out that Clark is the traveler sent to earth and believes he is here to conquer. Lex possesses a device that was meant to “control” the traveler which evidently meant to take his powers away.

This was a large turning point for Lex and Clark as after all his suspicions, Lex was right and it confirmed that Clark had lied to him all along. They started to splinter earlier in the show but this finale was the big moment for the enemies. Trying to kill or even control Clark and believing he is there for anything other than to help humanity definitely lost Lex some serious points.

6 FELT BAD FOR LEX: When He Believed Lana Was Dead

In the Season 6 finale, Lana learns that Lex faked the pregnancy and successfully fakes her own death and moves across the world in hiding.

When Lex is in the prison cell at the end of the episode, fans see him holding a photo of him and Lana and he briefly smiles, showing that he not only misses her but really did love her in his own twisted way. Even after all Lex has done, fans can’t help but feel bad for Lex.

5 HATED LEX: When He Tortured Arthur Curry

DC’s Arthur Curry/Aquaman appears in Season 5’s fourth episode ‘Aqua,’ where Lex is developing a new marine weapon called Leviathan. When Lex learns of Arthur’s abilities he captures him to stop AC from destroying Leviathan and, by extension, the deal he is trying to secure.

While Lex has AC strapped to the table, he denies him water which he needs to survive more than other humans. Torturing a member of the Justice League is definitely a way to get a mention on the ‘reasons we hate Lex’ list.

4 FELT BAD FOR LEX: When Lionel Cut Him Off

In Season 2’s fifteenth episode, ‘Prodigal,’ Lionel takes all of Lex’s assets and leaves him with nothing. Lex then moves in with the Kent’s temporarily and helps them around the farm.

In this episode, Lex’s half brother Lucas and Lionel are shown partnering up against Lex. Meanwhile, audiences got to see Lex willing to pull his own weight on the farm, wanting to prove to Jonathan Kent that he isn’t the villain Clark’s dad thinks he is (yet). Fans got a glimpse of Lex’s good side and his drastic lifestyle change, but his positive outlook is what pulls at the heartstrings here.

3 HATED LEX: When He Took Advantage Of Kara

Smallville 5 Times We Felt Bad For Lex Luthor (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

In Season 7, after Clark destroys Kara’s crystal and saves her, she ends up in Detroit with no memories. Lex manages to track her down and shows her kindness but has his own agenda which is to use her to uncover secrets about Clark. He manipulates Kara when she is vulnerable to achieve his own goals.

Luckily, Chloe and Lana take Kara to the fortress to restore her memories before Lex gets the chance. Fans aren’t surprised by Lex’s actions and this adds another offense to the list.

2 FELT BAD FOR LEX: When He Lost His Memories

Smallville 5 Times We Felt Bad For Lex Luthor (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

In the Season 10 finale, Lex and Clark become the respective villain and hero they were always meant to be, with Clark finally learning to fly. In the final moments of the episode, Lex kills Tess at Luthorcorp but just before she dies, she reveals that the treatment he underwent at Sommerholt institute will affect his “cognitive recognition.” Simply put, this means that any memories he had before that moment would soon be wiped from his mind.

Years of friendship with Clark, his relationship with Lana, and anything about his father all gone. As a result, he only knows Clark as an enemy. It would be interesting to see the world where this Lex remembers everything he has gone through and the differences it would make.

1 HATED LEX: When He Tore Clark & Lana Apart

In Season 8’s fourteenth episode ‘Requiem,’ Lex orchestrates an explosion originating from the roof of The Daily Planet involving a Kryptonite bomb that will cause an unprecedented amount of damage. Clark and Lana, with her abilities, race to the roof and learn that the only way to stop the bomb detonating is for Lana to absorb the Kryptonite with the help of her “suit.”

The amount that she absorbs results in Clark never being able to go near Lana ever again as she now has the same effect on him that Kryptonite does, which evidently was Lex’s plan all along. This is arguably the evilest thing Lex did on the show.
