An icon of 1980s kids’ animation, The Smurfs, will be back in multiple upcoming projects, including an animated musical movie which is set to begin production this year.

The new musical is planned to be released on Dec. 20, 2024, THR reported, with Pam Brady attached as writer. No director or voice cast has yet been confirmed. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon will partner with LAFIG Belgium and IMPS for this and other films based on the cheerful blue characters.

New content for the franchise will also include a second season of the CG-animated series The Smurfs on Nickelodeon, consisting of another 26 episodes. The show, which premiered on Sep. 20, 2021, is a revival of the classic cartoon and features many legacy characters such as Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy Smurf, Jokey Smurf and the villain Gargamel. The voice cast includes Berangere McNeese, Lenny Mark Irons, Youssef El Kaoukibi and Catherine Hershey.

Ramsey Naito, the president of animation for both Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, issued a statement about the new Smurfs projects, saying, “Nickelodeon is the home to some of the world’s most popular family franchises and we’re honored to add The Smurfs to that roster.” In reference to the first movie, he added, “We’re excited to tell a story that stays true to its origins, but with a Smurf-tastic musical twist that excites new audiences and builds on the Smurfs franchise and universe of wonderful characters and stories.”

The upcoming musical’s writer Pam Brady previously worked on South Park and Team America: World Police. Both are adult comedies, respectively a long-running animated TV series and a puppet movie, created by the team of Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

The Smurfs date back to art and stories by Pierre Culliford, or “Peyo,” the Belgian artist who originally created the characters in 1958. In the USA, the franchise is best known through the Hanna-Barbera cartoon The Smurfs, which aired on Saturday mornings from 1981 to 1989. The titular Smurfs are a race of tiny, blue-skinned humanoids who tend to be named after their most noticeable personality traits and use the word “Smurf” or “Smurfy” in their language with any number of meanings.

Paramount and Nickelodeon have animation in the works beyond The Smurfs, with Big Nate set to air this year and CG-animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Chapter planned to release in August 2023.
