Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

The life of an outlaw is a stressful one, as seen on Sons Of Anarchy. Throughout the show’s seven seasons, the club faced many conflicts. The show’s pulpy nature introduced some crazy and intense plotlines that left viewers eager to watch the next episode.

That being said, not every plot was engaging enough, whether it was due to a lack of payoff or just being plain boring. As the show progressed, episodes became longer, introducing more and more subplots that weren’t always for the best, resulting in an overall lack of focus. Here are Sons Of Anarchy’s five best storylines and the five worst.

10 Worst: The Club Heading To Ireland

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

While Abel’s kidnapping was a terrifying cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, what followed was an exhausting plot that saw SAMCRO heading all the way to Ireland to rescue him. While it was nice to get some more backstory on Jax’s father, John Teller, it lasted just a little too long.

You just kept getting frustrated that nobody wanted to give Abel back and all it caused was more problems. This is also where the show started to become too soapy as many family secrets are uncovered. It’s revealed that John ended up having a daughter, Trinity, with a woman named Maureen Ashby. Later on, Jax almost sleeps with Trinity, unknown that she’s his half-sister.

9 Best: Stahl Making Opie Look Like A Rat

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

June Stahl was a terrific villain. Even though she’s a cop, she was just as ruthless and deadly as the criminals she goes after. Her first terrible act was setting Opie to look like a rat by paying for his overdue bills and setting up a wire in his truck.

If there’s one thing SAMCRO has no tolerance for, it’s a snitch, especially Clay and Tig, who then secretly plot to kill Opie. Unfortunately, a slight mix-up in the plan resulted in Donna, Opie’s wife, getting shot instead. This was an excellent way to show that certain members are willing to go against the club’s wishes, despite being all about brotherhood. This also causes a rift between Jax and Clay, a conflict that would build throughout the show.

8 Worst: Juice’s Leverage

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

In order to gain leverage over Juice, new Sheriff Eli Roosevelt tells Juice that his father, who he never knew, is actually black. Even though Juice has been a member for years, him being black is against club rules. Still, it’s kind of far-fetched that that SAMCRO would be willing to banish Juice for this news.

Juice could’ve just come clean to the club about the leverage. That would ultimately prove his loyalty since he’s willing to confess this information and not turn on SAMCRO. Instead, Juice ratted on the club and his downfall would continue until his death under the orders of Jax. While it made for some intense television, it would have never happened if Juice had just told the truth.

7 Best: The Galindo Cartel

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

After the convoluted mess that was the Ireland section, the show sort of hit the reset button. Half the club was out of prison and ready to start earning again. Their new buyer was the Galindo cartel. However, it’s revealed that Clay also made a deal with them to mule their drugs.

As expected, many members were completely opposed to this new move. Bobby even challenged Clay for his presidency. This storyline makes up most of Season 4, with the tension building in each episode since the dangers of cartel business start to occur, including a war with a rival cartel.

6 Worst: Lee Toric’s Revenge Mission

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

In order to hurt the club, Otto brutally kills a nurse, which puts Tara under investigation for conspiracy to murder. It turns out that the nurse’s brother, Lee Toric, is a former US Marshall and a complete psychopath. It was a perfect set-up for a ruthless antagonist but due to circumstances behind the scenes, it was short-lived and failed to live up to potential.

Actor Donal Logue, who plays Toric, was originally signed on to last the entire season, even going into Season 7. However, Logue’s schedule became full after he became a series regular on Vikings. Toric was then abruptly killed off early in Season 4. It’s a shame because he was being set-up as one of the show’s best villains.

5 Best: Damon Pope

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

Damon Pope was the central antagonist of Season 5 after Tig accidentally killed Pope’s daughter. This was a huge mistake since Pope is a deadly gangster in Oakland with a ton of money and power.

Over the course of the season, Pope would prove to be a deadly adversary for Jax. Pope’s first act of vengeance was burning Tig’s daughter, Dawn Trager, alive. It’s definitely one of the show’s most disturbing scenes, which is saying a lot. His next action was getting some of the club in prison, which tragically ended with Opie getting killed. Oddly enough, Pope develops respect for Jax, becoming a mentor to him. Of course, Jax wasn’t going to forget that his best friend is dead because of Pope. In the end, Jax used what he learned to win.

4 Worst: Clay In Prison

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

Even though Jax was able to frame Clay for Pope’s murder, it was doubtful that this is how Clay would be killed off. By this point, Clay has become the ultimate villain of the show to Jax. A random hitman or prison kill would not be poetic enough.

Due to this, Clay being in prison for most of Season 6 felt like the show stalling and padding out the story as long as they could. His death was inevitable given where the characters were headed, so it just felt exhausting to still have him alive for two whole seasons after Jax discovered the truth about his father’s murder.

3 Best: Jax Finding Out Gemma Killed Tara

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

It was quite a shock when Gemma murdered Tara, especially because it was a misunderstanding. As the final season started, fans were ready for Jax to eventually find out the truth.

Most of the final season revolved around an unnecessary war between SAMCRO and Lin’s crew thanks to Gemma blaming it on Lin. Due to this, many things escalate when they shouldn’t have, including a tragic mass shooting. When Jax finally learns the truth from Juice, it’s heartbreaking. Charlie Hunnam gives his best performance in this scene as Jax just can’t handle the reality of the situation, trying so hard to hold back his tears.

2 Worst: The Club Protecting Loutreesha And Grant From August Marks

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Best Storylines (And 5 Worst)

If this were in a different and earlier season, maybe it would not be on this list. The problem is that this storyline happens during the final season. They introduce this new subplot in which a dead pastor’s family is being threatened by August Marks to give up their land. Jax offers to protect them.

The problem is, this is supposed to be the final chapter in Sons Of Anarchy. The focus should be on the club handling their affairs. Instead, viewers got this boring melodramatic subplot involving new characters that nobody cares about. It adds unnecessary padding to the story and was definitely the worst part of the final season.

1 Best: Clay Vs Jax

Show Creator Kurt Sutter made it clear in the beginning that Sons Of Anarchy would be somewhat inspired by Hamlet. Jax is obviously meant to be Hamlet. His father was secretly killed by his best-friend Clay. Just like King Claudius, Clay then marries Gemma and takes over as club president.

The show took its time to have Clay become the main antagonist of the show and it was worth it in the end. The seeds were planted, especially when Clay tried to have Opie killed. Season 4 is where Clay’s true nature was finally revealed. He was shown to only care about himself and was willing to do just about anything to get what he wants, even killing Piney. It was only a matter of time until Jax would get his vengeance.
