With Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures back on speaking terms thanks to Tom Holland, Spider-Man 3 (or whatever it’s gonna be called) is back in The MCU. There’s a good chance this means that a fourth installment is happening, whether it be its own movie or a part two for Spider-Man 3.

No matter what Marvel and Sony’s plan is, fans will always be speculating as to what story they will take cues from. With nearly 60 years of stories to his name, there are a lot of Spider-Man stories that could inspire the next film, some of which you would never expect.

10 The Hobgoblin Saga

“The Hobgoblin Saga” is as iconic as it is convoluted. For a good while, it was a mystery as to who was dressing up as The Hobgoblin, with many names being thrown around both in the comics and in the Marvel bullpen.

There are even some connecting pieces to The Hobgoblin in The MCU, as Ned Leeds and Flash Thompson were both suspects. The true identity of The Hobgoblin could even remain a secret, if the status quo for Spider-Man is shaken up, he’s done his job.

9 To Have And To Hold

Before Joe Quesada decided that “One More Day” was a good idea, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage was one of the most cherished things in comics. Their love was the glue that made Spider-Man what he was, with “To Have And To Hold” being one of the last great memories of the story.

In the story, thanks to Spider-Man’s fugitive status in a post-Civil War landscape, Peter and MJ go on the run, recounting beautiful memories about their past in the process. Mary Jane hasn’t been one-hundred percent established in The MCU, but clearly Zendaya’s MJ is supposed to fill that role, and they certainly have a lot to recall about their relationship.

8 Open All Night

The late Darwyn Cooke was a comic book treasure, but while his core legacy is with DC Comics, few people talk about the work he did for Marvel. While there are a ton of hidden gems, his magnum opus for the former Timely Comics is a little tale by the name of “Open All Night.”

A small story about how Peter Parker accidentally stands up two dates on Valentine’s Day because of The Vulture, the story may not introduce any new characters that could sell toys, but that really shouldn’t be the point anymore. Also, after the insanity of the previous three movies, “Open All Night” could be a nice decompressor.

7 Learning Curve

Though people often point to stories that take place in the regular continuity, never underestimate The Ultimate Universe. There are a lot of great Ultimate Spider-Man stories, but one of the most underrated is “Learning Curve.”

Though he’s more famous for being a Daredevil villain, Ultimate Kingpin was Spider-Man’s greatest nemesis, with “Learning Curve” being the story that set the two off. It’s only a matter of time before Vincent D’Onofrio returns to The MCU, so why not introduce Spider-Man and Daredevil’s shared nemesis in Spider-Man 4?

6 The Death Of Jean DeWolff

One of the darkest stories in Spider-Man’s lexicon, “The Death Of Jean DeWolff ” may be difficult to adapt to The MCU, as DeWolff hasn’t appeared yet. However, two key elements of the story make it a prime candidate.

First off, MCU Spidey has been a little too sweet with little to no conflict, so giving a post Far From Home Spidey a little more edge wouldn’t be a bad idea. Second, this story started a strong friendship between Spider-Man and Daredevil, which would be amazing to see in The MCU.

5 The Gauntlet

Speaking of edge, “The Gauntlet” was a rough time for Peter Parker. Described by some as Spidey’s equivalent to Batman’s “Knightfall” story, “The Gauntlet” pits Spider-Man against several of his most iconic villains, being put through the wringer as a result.

Though the ending proved to be somewhat disappointing, the idea of a more pacifist Kill Bill only with Spider-Man is an appetizing prospect. While the story might be a bit too intense for little kids, Disney could certainly sell toys off of this.

4 The Chameleon Strikes

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 has one of the most iconic covers of all time, but does anyone know what the story of that issue was? After receiving a check for a previous activity, Spidey is unable to cash it because he doesn’t have an ID.

Strapped for cash and with J. Jonah Jameson beginning his anti-Spider-Man campaign, Spider-Man attempts to join The Fantastic Four, only to wrapped into a plot by The Chameleon. After the Fox deal, a lot of people are pumped to see The FF meet Spidey, why not turn to the first time they ever met?

3 The Clone Saga

Put those pitchforks down! “The Clone Saga” is one of the most infamous periods in comics history, but The Ultimate Universe’s take on the tale is far more well-received. The story was essentially a retelling of the story with a more grounded, concise flavor, as well as a far more satisfying conclusion.

Not only that, but the story also had a great sense of tension and an amazing mystery at its core that would be a fun sight to see on the big screen. Though the idea of adapting “The Clone Saga” may send a shiver down fans’ spines, hopefully it would be worth it.

2 Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut

SpiderMan 10 Underrated Stories That Could Inspire SpiderMan 4

Deadpool 2 gave us a good version of The Juggernaut, so why not use what you’ve got? Though it isn’t talked about as much as many of his other stories, “Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut” is the best Spider-Man story by Roger Stern, one of the best Spidey authors.

When Juggernaut sets his sights on someone close to Spider-Man, Spidey must do whatever it takes to stop The Juggernaut. Not only could this introduce MCU fans to one of The X-Men’s greatest foes, but it could also prove to be a great deconstruction of Spider-Man and his relationship with responsibility.

1 Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine

Watching as Kevin Feige and crew replace Hugh Jackman is gonna be a tough pill to swallow for some fans, however, since that is happening either way, they might as well make a statement with it. Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine was a fantastic series, but one that isn’t really talked about all that much.

Giving Spider-Man and Wolverine a buddy cop film where they go from hating each other’s guts to developing a budding friendship would be an awesome move for Marvel Studios and Sony. It could be a nice homage to how Hugh Jackman was supposed to cameo in 2002’s Spider-Man, only for that to fall through.
