Spider-Man Can Beat Up Superman (On ONE Condition)

Spider-Man is nowhere near as powerful as Superman, but he can still beat him – once he gets to use the same kind of Kryptonian strength and stamina!

SpiderMan Can Beat Up Superman (On ONE Condition)

Spider-Man usually has a fairly low level of super strength, enabling him to bench press 10 tons (a small amount compared to gods like Thor and Hercules who regularly lift well over 100 tons). His power looks even more minuscule compared to guys like DC’s Superman who have been known to push planets and change the course of mighty rivers.

Even so, Peter Parker has gotten much stronger at times in storylines like “The Other” (which gave him the ability to lift over 20 tons) and the time he became bonded with the Enigma Force (which enabled him to lift over 500 tons). And then there was the time Spider-Man beat up Superman…

Yes, you read that right – Spider-Man once gave the Man of Steel an epic beating in the classic Marvel/DC Crossover Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man. Even more amazing? The Superman that Spidey fought was the Pre-Crisis Superman who could destroy solar systems with a sneeze on his best days! Yet while this Superman put most of Marvel Comics’ gods to shame, Spidey had no problem smacking him around… thanks to a little help from Lex Luthor.

The comic, which sparked the first of several classic Marvel/DC crossovers, featured a world where Marvel and DC characters lived side-by-side, although they rarely crossed paths. This enabled Lex Luthor to be imprisoned in the same jail that held Dr. Octopus. Frustrated by their regular defeats from their respective foes, the two conspired to switch enemies – and Luthor even used a secret sonic device to help engineer an escape for him and Doc Ock.

Later, the two decided to pit their foes against each other – first by having Luthor dress like Superman and seemingly take out Mary Jane and Lois Lane. This got Peter Parker mad enough to switch to Spider-Man and go looking for Superman, who just happened to be close by. To ensure Spidey had a fighting chance, Lex Luthor secretly blasted Spider-Man with a red sun radiation ray.

The ray’s effects were two-fold. First, it boosted Spidey’s spider-strength to even higher levels. Second, because Superman loses his powers under a red sun, it allowed Spider-Man’s punches to affect the Man of Steel more than they would a regular foe. Superman found this out immediately when Spider-Man’s first blow sent him careening earthward, forcing him to make a rapid flight correction. Fortunately, the Man of Steel’s invulnerability protected him from the brunt of the blow – not that that mattered since Spider-Man quickly swung in and kicked Superman in the jaw, informing him, “I’ve got a newsflash for you, Supes! You’re not half so tough as you think you are!”

For his part, Spider-Man was shocked at how easily Superman was folding underneath his punches – especially when his kick sent Superman crashing into the roof of a skyscraper. Wondering if Superman was just over-rated, he continued pummeling the Man of Steel and sent him tumbling off another rooftop. At this point, Superman finally got mad and swung a full-powered punch at Spidey… only to realize at the last second that if it connected, he’d murder the web swinger. Although Superman managed to pull his punch at the last instant, the wind-blast of the blow still sent Spider-Man crashing through a building. Amazingly, the red sun radiation saved Spidey from serious harm – but as he re-engaged his foe, it wore off and Spidey found himself realizing just how powerful Superman really was. Wondering how his sparring partner had gotten so hard, Spidey began pounding away at Superman… and nearly broke his hands.

Fortunately, this allowed Spider-Man to finally listen to Superman, who’d figured out that they’d both been duped into fighting each other. Spidey and Supes teamed up to save Mary Jane and Lois Lane, leaving their fight with a clear winner in Superman (who basically just had to stand in once place and let Spidey hit him until the web spinner conceded defeat). While this inevitable end was predictable, it was actually entertaining seeing Spider-Man temporarily finding himself in the same class as a Silver Age Superman. Just don’t expect a repeat performance any time soon…
