There are quite a few villains who have earned the title of Spider-Man’s arch-enemy over the years, though none have been a pain in his side quite as long as Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, whose genius intellect matched with his powerful metallic tentacles has made him an incredible threat to both Spider-Man and the Marvel Universe.

Doctor Octopus’ place amongst Spider-Man’s villains has led to a number of live-action and animated appearances outside of the comics that have further cemented his villainous status, though modern adaptations of the character have also explored his heroic side as well. So which of the various adaptations of Doctor Octopus is the best?

The Doctor Octopus that appeared in Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers was quite a bit different than other versions of the character, which was par for the course with the unique series that trapped a number of heroes and villains in usable DISKs that could be activated by a team of teens to stop Loki and his team.

Doctor Octopus (voiced by Dai Matsumoto) featured a heavily armored look that further animalized the character, though he was a strategical threat that almost took out the young team of heroes and their Avengers.

Doctor Octopus (voiced by Luc Roderique) appeared a couple of times in Marvel Super Hero Adventures, which was a series of short stories featuring Spider-Man as he shared stories about team-ups with other Marvel heroes.

Spider-Man worked alongside Miles Morales and Ghost-Spider to stop Doctor Octopus’ heists, as he was portrayed mostly as a thief, though his armored green and orange costume called back to his animated counterpart from the 90s that was more of a scientific villain.

Firestar and Iceman joined the wall-crawler in the 80s for Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends as they worked together as a superhero team that dealt with a number of comic book villains, though they were often tweaked for the animated series.

Doctor Octopus (voiced by Michael Bell) appeared once in his classic green and orange supervillain costume as he attempted to steal a time ship from a pair of time-travelers, though he was quickly defeated and his role in the episode was dwarfed by the introduction of Spider-Man’s new love interest from the future.

The character appeared in the same green and orange costume and was aided by a team of agents that almost enabled his plan to work, though when Hulk arrived he tied Doc Ock’s metallic tentacles together and stopped the compound-loaded rocket, saving the day and ending the villain’s run on his series.

The best appearance of Doctor Octopus (voiced by Stanley Jones) in the 80s was on Spider-Man, which saw the villain steal a few rare gems as Spider-Man attempted to unsuccessfully stop him at each of the crimes.

When Spider-Man finally managed to track Doc Ock down, he discovered that he had used the gems to enhance his chemicals with new powerful abilities that caught Spider-Man off guard, allowing him to be captured. Doc Ock then attempted to steal the world’s oil before Spider-Man was able to stop him, elevating his villainy.

When Spider-Man first encountered Doc Ock’s lab, he stumbled upon a plan to detonate a number of explosives in New York City before he was stopped. He also attempted to hold Earth’s plans for space travel hostage with a new weapons system that tied in perfectly to the era.

While Otto Octavious was de-aged along with a number of other characters to fit in with Marvel’s Spider-Man’s scientific high school setting, he was still separated from the main cast of heroes due to his role as one of Peter Parker’s brilliant teachers.

After his metallic tentacles were fused to his spine after a lab accident, he attempted to work with Spider-Man as a hero, though ultimately he turned to villainy and formed his own version of the Sinister Six. The series also adapted the Superior Spider-Man storyline which saw Doctor Octopus take over the body of Peter Parker.

Doctor Octopus (voiced by Tom Kenny) appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man (and for an episode of the related Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.) in a number of different forms that homaged the comics, though the series also featured its own unique take on the villain.

While working for Oscorp, Octavius was completely paralyzed in an accident and forced to rely on his mechanical tentacles, and as his body worsened over the series his form continued to change until he was able to create a powerful new body that homaged his classic comic look. He was one of Spider-Man’s primary villains who also aided in the creation of other villains like Venom.

3 Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

An entirely new version of Doctor Octopus was introduced in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which took place in Miles Morales’ home reality as Dr. Olivia Octavius/Doctor Octopus worked with Kingpin to create a device to explore the multiverse.

The new Doc Ock (voiced by Kathryn Han) featured the same brilliance as her 616 counterpart as evidenced by her creation of the multiversal supercollider, though her tentacles looked more organic than robotic, and her uniform was equally unique which gave fans a fun new take on Doc Ock that proved to be a hit.

2 Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994)

Fox aired Spider-Man: The Animated Series in the 90s which included a number of classic Spider-Man villains, though they were given a modern update which included a new set of green and orange armor for Doctor Octopus (voiced by Efram Zimbalist, Jr.), but the same bad haircut.

This version of Doctor Octopus was originally a teacher of Peter Parker’s before the accident transformed him, and he featured a thick accent that separated him from previous animated adaptations. This version formed the Insidious Six as the series removed any “sinister” elements for the kid-friendly cartoon.

1 Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Alfred Molina brought the only live-action adaptation of Doctor Octopus to the big screen in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 from director Sam Raimi, which has been hailed as one of the best superhero movies (and sequels) that fans have ever seen.

The movie introduced Dr. Octavius as a possible scientific mentor for Peter Parker before an accident cost him the life of his wife and fused the robotic tentacles to his spine, which allowed their artificial intelligence to manipulate his actions. This version of the character has proven to be so popular that he will reappear in the MCU’s as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3.
