SpiderMan Far From Homes EDITH Was Secretly Teased In Iron Man 3

Spider-Man: Far From Home’s E.D.I.T.H. was secretly teased in Iron Man 3. Peter Parker found himself in quite a bit of trouble after being bequeathed Tony Stark’s E.D.I.T.H. (aka, Even Dead, I’m The Hero), an artificial intelligence security and defense system. With the system, which looked and functioned like a regular pair of glasses to others, Spider-Man could activate and use missiles and other weaponry created by Stark Industries. However, the A.I. unit was actually alluded to long before Far From Home.

Tony Stark was no stranger to creating and manipulating advanced technology — be it for tactical weapons use or for a time travel heist in Avengers: Endgame. After all, this is the man who essentially helped to create Ultron, originally designed to be an artificial intelligence peacekeeping program. In Far From Home, Peter is ultimately ill-equipped to handle the responsibility of such an advanced (and rather terrifying) system and it’s something that should not have been in the hands of a teenager to begin with.

That said, it’s unclear when Iron Man actually came up with and created E.D.I.T.H., but there’s evidence to suggest he was already planning for the security and defense system all the way back in Iron Man 3. During a fight with Eric Savin, a superpowered ally of the villain Aldrich Killian, Iron Man says, “That’s the thing about smart guys, we always cover our ass,” before revealing the Iron Man suit’s arc reactor in his hand and firing at the antagonist. It’s not a direct reference to E.D.I.T.H. per se, but the line does imply that Tony has always been ten steps ahead when it comes to most everything. In hindsight, the line effectively foreshadowed the arrival of E.D.I.T.H., whether intentional or not.

This has been established on several occasions throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Endgame, Tony made a hologram video for his family, which was played for them during his funeral. It’s as though he knew he wouldn’t make it back from the Avengers’ battle with Thanos alive. He also left E.D.I.T.H. to Peter to use in the event of his death, so Iron Man obviously had plans in place should anything happen. Even when he and Captain America failed to obtain the Space Stone in 2012, it’s Tony who comes up with the plan to travel back to 1970 to retrieve it and get more Pym particles to be able to return to the present day.

Creating the Ultron program was also Tony’s attempt to side step any future threats, which is another take on the line of smart guys always covering their asses. E.D.I.T.H. is no different. Iron Man has long attempted to thwart problems by building artificial intelligence systems for defense and other uses. In that vein, it’s possible the events of Iron Man 3 are what led to E.D.I.T.H. While it’s questionable that he would give such a highly advanced system to Peter in Spider-Man: Far From Home, one can argue that Tony’s heart was at least in the right place.
