SpiderMan No Way Home Script Reveals a Secret Stan Lee Tribute

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, in theaters now.

Spider-Man: No Way Home screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers recently released the Sony/Marvel Studios film’s full script online. McKenna and Sommers’ screenplay features a number of interesting tidbits, including a planned Stan Lee tribute in the form of a cameo by a look-alike.

The moment comes on page 177 of the script, during the scene at the end of the movie in which Peter Parker (Tom Holland) attempts to reconnect with Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) at MJ’s place of work after his existence is wiped from their memories. “Peter finds MJ, talking and laughing with an older customer, a STAN LEE LOOK-ALIKE,” the script reads.

In the theatrical cut of the film, MJ is indeed seen speaking with an old man during the scene in question. However, numerous outlets note that this man being a Stan Lee look-alike is an idea that must have been left on the cutting room floor, as the actor doesn’t really bear much of a resemblance to the late comic book legend. In fact, as ComicBook.com notes, he’s more likely to be mistaken for Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym from the Ant-Man movies.

However, while a number of outlets report the homage as being “cut” from No Way Home, it seems as though some viewers did make the Stan Lee connection when they first saw the film in theaters. In a rather small amount of tweets made shortly after No Way Home’s release on Dec. 17, Twitter users questioned whether or not the old man at the end of the film was, in fact, supposed to be a Stan Lee look-alike.

“Not gonna lie, I thought I saw a Stan Lee lookalike cameo towards the end of [Spider-Man: No Way Home], but then I looked again and it looked like Hank Pym. Stop playin’ with out [sic] emotions,” one user tweeted on Dec. 20. “I thought the Stan Lee lookalike was a little ghoulish,” another user wrote on Dec. 23.

Nevertheless, there is an indisputable Stan Lee tribute in No Way Home, with a taxi sporting a license plate that reads, “1228.” This is a reference to Dec. 28, Lee’s birthday.

Given that Stan Lee is one of the most important figures in the history of Marvel Comics, it became commonplace for the legendary creator to make cameos in feature films and television shows based on the publisher’s books. Lee had an especially noticeable presence in the Spider-Man films, appearing in 2002’s Spider-Man, 2004’s Spider-Man 2, 2007’s Spider-Man 3, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is unsurprising, as Lee himself co-created the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Steve Ditko.

Lee passed away on Nov. 12, 2018 at the age of 95. His final live-action Marvel cameo came in the film Avengers: Endgame, which was released posthumously on April 26, 2019.
