Between record-breaking teasers, sizzle reels, the recent controversy surrounding leaked photos and the simple fact that Peter Parker is still Marvel’s signature hero, the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has generated an extraordinary level of interest. The third chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s story promises to pull out all of the stops, while likely serving as an important bridge to the next part of Phase Four.

Now that the first full trailer has arrived, it does everything fans expected: answering some questions, raising a few more and generally making the Dec. 17 release date an early holiday. The footage contains a great deal to unpack, some of it visible for only a few brief seconds.

Will No Way Home Cover Spider-Man’s Origin?

The specifics of how the MCU’s Peter Parker gained his powers – and his mission – have yet to be disclosed. Much of this is by design since both the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films went into detail on the subject. Holland’s Peter starts the trailer by referencing his beginning – starting with “ever since I got bit by that Spider” in the voiceover. No further details exist, but it does leave the possibility that, for better or worse, fans may see a new version of the origin story.

Spider-Man Gets His Black Suit – With a Twist

The Spider-Man’s black suit is featured prominently in the new No Way Home trailer. It includes what appears to be magical components, specifically magical runes on his right forearm. It also accompanies a voiceover from Doctor Strange, indicating that the villains need to be hunted down. That suggests that the black suit is either a gift from Strange or an old suit that Strange has enhanced with magic or relics.

Strange and Spider-Man Clash Over the Villains’ Fate

SpiderMan No Way Home Trailers Biggest Revelations & Mysteries

Early rumors held that Doctor Strange intended to send the bevy of cross-universe Spidey villains back to their points of origin, which causes a problem for figures like Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin who were killed in their respective Spider-Man films and may not wish to return. Spidey ultimately sides with his foes and incites a battle with Strange as a result. The trailer fleshes out a few more of the details, including Spidey’s attempted theft of the mysterious box. Strange confirms that “It’s their fate” to die fighting Spider-Man, and that as long as they remain, they’re a threat to the MCU.

J. Jonah Jameson Makes His Return

Though the shot is very brief, as is typical for MCU’s trailers, it does give a very clear shot of J.K. Simmons’ Jameson, who first played the character in the original 2002 Spider-Man and whose post-credits appearance at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home came as a delightful surprise for fans. He’s shown standing next to a Daily Bugle van and witnessing what appears to be an attack from Jamie Foxx’s Electro.

Electro Adopts a More Comics-Accurate Costume

Speaking of Electro, the trailer gives the clearest look at the new version of the villain thus far. It differs significantly from Foxx’s last appearance as the character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. His powers here appear to stem from a suit as opposed to the more fundamental physical change from the earlier movie. The electricity is yellow instead of blue, and the effects give the distinct visual impression of Electro’s yellow hood from the comics.

Willem Dafoe Is the Green Goblin, Once Again

The No Way Home teaser dropped a huge hint by showing the Goblin’s signature pumpkin bomb, specifically matching the design from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films. It was accompanied by a laugh that sounded suspiciously like Willem Dafoe, giving rise to the theory that he would return alongside the other villains. The new trailer confirms it, not only with a shot of Dafoe’s Goblin in gear and riding his glider, but an extended – and appropriately menacing – voiceover from the actor himself.

A Second Goblin May Be in Play in Spider-Man 3

Among the trailer’s plethora of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it snippets is a shot of a dark-haired figure riding a version of the Goblin’s glider, hurling green glowing weapons of some unknown variety. It could feasibly be James Franco’s Harry Osborn from the Raimi films or Dane DeHaan’s Harry from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It might also be Dafoe’s Goblin without his helmet, or a variant Goblin whom audiences haven’t seen yet.

The Sinister Six, or at Least the Sinister Five, Debuts

In addition to Doctor Octopus, Electro and at least one Goblin, the trailer reveals the Lizard and the Sandman as well. That constitutes five versions of the villains from each of the first five Spider-Man movies. Harry Osborn or a similar Goblin variant would make it six, as would any number of additional Spider-Man villains not yet shown in the promotional material. Given the count, it’s hard to believe that Marvel wouldn’t take the opportunity to formally deliver the Sinister Six.

MJ Takes a Gwen Stacy-Style Fall

SpiderMan No Way Home Trailers Biggest Revelations & Mysteries

Spider-Man’s love interests have a distressing habit of falling from great heights, which the movies have taken advantage of. No Way Home presents MJ’s turn in the barrel. The trailer depicts her falling in a shot matching that of Mary Jane Watson’s fall in the 2002 Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy’s fatal drop in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The trailer leaves the question of her survival open, and with No Way Home billed as an Endgame of sorts for Spidey, her survival is far from guaranteed.

Does the Multiverse Arrive in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

The trailer closes with purple ribbons of energy spreading across the sky above the Statue of Liberty. “They’re starting to come through,” Doctor Strange says ominously, “and I can’t stop them.” The trailer doesn’t specify the circumstances beyond that but considering the numerous villains at play, there could be even more multiversal shenanigans on the way. It could mark something comparatively early setting up No Way Home’s plot, or it could be a precursor to the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Only time will tell.

Spider-Man: No Way Home opens exclusively in theaters on December 17.
