SpiderVerse 2 Official Title Revealed Split Into Two Movies

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 gets a title and release date and will be split into two movies. The first Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was released in 2018 and starred Shameik Moore as Miles Morales/Spider-Man, who took on the lead role of the film while joined by other Spider-Verse characters from around the multiverse. Jake Johnson voiced Peter Parker, Hailee Steinfeld voiced Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Nicolas Cage was Spider-Man Noir, with Kimiko Glenn as Peni Parker, and John Mulaney as Spider-Ham. The animated film was directed by the trio of Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman with a screenplay by Rodney Rothman and Phil Lord.

Into The Spider-Verse grossed $356 million worldwide and was a big hit for Sony. Shortly after it was released a sequel was announced as being in development, but with little details as to what it would be or when it would debut. The first film firmly established the Spider-Man multiverse aka Spider-Verse, where Spider-Men (and women and robots, etc.) are able to jump into and interact in different dimensions. A post-credits sequence in the first film teased Spider-Man 2099, a popular character in the Marvel Comics stable of Spider-Man characters.

Sony has released a new announcement trailer for the Spider-Verse sequel, which reveals the new title for the sequel as Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse – Part One. The “Part One” in question reveals that it will be part of a bigger story, be it two parts or more. In addition to the title and chapter announcement, Sony also gave the first synopsis for the film, which you can see below:

“Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is directed by the new team of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, with a script by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and David Callaham. Moore and Steinfeld are back in their respective roles, with Oscar Isaac playing Spider-Man 2099 in what appears to be a more substantial role. The film is set for release only in theaters on October 7, 2022.

Fans have eagerly been anticipating a follow-up to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and it looks like they’ll be getting more than just that with Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. With Spider-Man: No Way Home believed to be shaking things up in terms of the multiverse, it comes as no surprise that the animated franchise would lean into it as well. Having new “Spider-People” involved in the adventure makes the follow-up that much more exciting, too, as it allows more experimentation with the overall concept and exposure to more of the characters that the Spider-Verse has to offer.
