Spotify Price What Each Plan Costs & Which To Sign Up For

Spotify is one of the best music streaming apps available, with one of the many reasons being its pricing options. Whether users listen for free, get an individual Premium account, or get one for a large family, there’s a Spotify plan for virtually everyone.

While Spotify can be listened to for free, most people will want to sign up for a Spotify Premium plan. Premium members don’t have to listen to ads, can download songs for offline playback, can listen to any song on-demand, and can skip as many tracks as they’d like. These are all things that are hindered when using Spotify for free, making the choice to upgrade a pretty easy one for anyone that spends a lot of time on the app. What isn’t quite as easy, however, is deciding which Spotify Premium plan to pay for.

In total, there are four different Spotify Premium plans that people can choose from. Individual is the most common option, which includes access to one Spotify Premium account for $9.99/month. The next step up from there is Duo for $12.99/month, which offers two Premium accounts and access to the Duo Mix — “a playlist for two, regularly updated with music you both enjoy.” The most expensive plan is Family, which costs $15.99/month for six Spotify Premium accounts. Subscribers also get a Family Mix, in addition to Spotify Kids (a standalone app designed specifically for younger users). Last but certainly not least, college students can sign up for the Student plan. It’s virtually identical to Individual, but it’s half the price at $4.99/month and includes free access to Hulu and Showtime.

How To Pick The Right Spotify Premium Plan

While having so many choices might be a little overwhelming at first, deciding which plan to get ultimately comes down to each person’s lifestyle. For anyone living by themselves, getting the Individual plan is the way to go. It’s affordable at under $10 per month, includes all of the features that come with Spotify Premium, and doesn’t come with unnecessary accounts that won’t be used. For anyone who lives on their own and is a college student, signing up for the Student option is a terrific deal. Slashing the price in half is a good offer on its own, so the fact that Spotify also includes Hulu and Showtime is just icing on the cake. Users need to verify their enrollment by logging in with their college/university’s online account, and once all signed up, the Student plan can only be renewed up to three times for a total of four years of access.

For people that do live with others, the Duo and Family plans offer potentially massive savings. Duo is a fantastic choice for couples or roommates, with each person getting their own fully-featured Premium account for just $6.50 per person. Considering it’s cheaper than two Individual plans and includes all of the same features, there’s no reason not to sign up for it. For the Family plan, it’s in a pretty similar boat. Whether users take advantage of all six available accounts or just three, it still results in a cheaper monthly rate. Using a Family account with three people would bring the per-person cost down to $5.33 while using all six accounts would lower it to only $2.66. For families of all shapes and sizes, the Family plan offers tremendous value.

The only catch with the Duo and Family plans is the wording that comes with them. Spotify notes that the accounts must all be used by people living under the same roof, meaning they aren’t intended to be shared by people living in different places. There are reports of some users doing this anyways and getting away with it, but doing so could result in Spotify banning the account. It’s a move that goes directly against the terms of service, so be sure to keep that in mind before signing up for either one.
