Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

Squid Game and Game of Thrones are two of the most twisted series in the past 20 years. After its launch in September, Netflix’s Squid Game took the world by storm. The Korean hit drama surprisingly thrilled audiences with its dark premise. Ten years ago, Game of Thrones did the same thing on HBO.

These phenomenons and their characters blew fans away. With characters like Il-Nam and Arya Stark, both series share characters with unexpected twists. Logically, many characters from Squid Game align with characters fcrom Game of Thrones.

10 The Salesman: Varys

Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

In the first episode of Squid Game, The Salesman initiates the eeriness that surrounds the entire show. He appears with a suit, briefcase, and never-faltering smile, managing to exude sinister and mischievous energy. The Salesman succeeds at his job, drawing in hundreds of contestants through the bizarre punishment versus reward tactic.

Varys, well known as the Master of Whispers, is a mysterious man with a stoic and reserved nature comparable to The Salesman’s ability to remain unbothered by anything. With a spy network spanning two continents, Varys seems all-knowing, just as The Salesman knows everything about Gi-Hun, seeming to have eyes everywhere.

9 Jang Deok-su: Joffrey Baratheon

Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

Deok-su is the antagonist among the contestants. He’s rude, arrogant, and relies on brute force to get his way. With this, he manages to take control of some of the strongest competitors and initiates a dormitory riot with their help. But he reveals his fear when Gi-Hun mentions that his teammates could turn on him.

Joffery shares nearly all of Deok-su’s characteristics, except being a king and all. He’s an arrogant kid ruling with no notion of politics and heavy reliance on force and power. Joffrey’s position on the throne and execution of Ned Stark caused a divide that led to war. And during the war, he shows just how cowardly he is.

8 Han Mi-nyeo: Cersei Lannister

Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

Mi-nyeo might come off as annoying, but she’s actually rather cunning. Aware that she’s not the smartest or strongest of players, she uses others to survive. She talks until people give in to get what she wants. She flip-flops between groups when she thinks it will benefit her.

Cersei is also a wilful and cunning woman, in the sense that she’ll do anything to protect herself her family. Just as Mi-nyeo talks, Cersei schemes her way into getting what she wants. And she builds alliances with other houses to benefit herself.

7 Byeong-gi: Theon Greyjoy

Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

Byeong-gi cheats the system by working with the guards in exchange for upcoming game information. He weasels his way into Deok-su’s group with this information. Then, karma hits him for breaking the rules.

Before his redemption arc, Theon is by far the most relatable to Byeong-gi. He cheats his way into a position of power. Karma eventually comes his way as well when Ramsay Bolton tortures him into servitude. Unlike, Byeong-gi, Theon gets a redemption arc, but Theon’s torturing was worse than Byeong-gi’s death.

6 Hwan Jun-ho: Sansa

Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

Jun-ho comes in as a family man on the hunt for his missing brother. As a police officer, he easily infiltrates the Squid Game island and learns the structure of the hierarchy to blend in. He’s determined to find his brother, and in one of the many shocking Squid Game twists, he discovers In-ho is The Front Man.

Sansa relates to Jun-ho in the sense that they’re both strongly determined characters. She quickly learns things are not as they appear and must adapt to her surroundings. She pretends to be someone she’s not to blend in, just as Jun-ho does until she makes her way back home. They both find their families in the end. Unfortunately, the audience never sees Jun-ho grow as Sansa does.

5 Ali Abdul: Samlwell Tarly

Ali is the most naive character on Squid Game, but he is also kind-hearted and super strong. He quickly picks up the unfamiliar children’s games. In addition, Ali receives guidance from Sang-woo.

Similarly, Sam navigates Crow life under Jon Snow’s guidance. He wouldn’t have gained his confidence without Jon. Sam learns quickly but mostly through books and not the more challenging tasks Ali has to learn under intense pressure. Just as Ali is the kindest character of Squid Game, Sam is probably the kindest on Game of Thrones but by no means the strongest.

4 Choo Sang-woo: Tyrion Lannister

As Gi-Hun’s childhood friend, Sang-woo seems as though he’ll be a supportive competitor. After the honeycomb game, it seeps through that he might only look out for himself. And during the marbles game, the truth of just how deceitful he’s playing comes out. His choice of winning over friendship is clear, and he uses cunning and cruel tactics to reach the end.

Tyrion is one of Game of Thrones’s most underrated strategic characters. None of the other characters see him as a threat at first, like Sang-woo. But his intelligence leads him to high places, and he decidedly goes against his family, killing his father in one of the best deaths on Game of Thrones. Just as Sang-woo, Tyrion uses strategic moves because his brain is the best thing he has.

3 Seong Gi-Hun: Jon Snow

Gi-Hun is quick-thinking in time-pressing situations. He smartly realizes he can lick the shape out of his dalgona candy, wins the marble game by using Il-nam’s dementia against him, and throws sand in Sang-woo’s eye in the final game to win. However, he never kills anyone, and he gives everyone a chance, even suggesting Deok-su be mindful of his group and accepting Sae-byeok after she pickpocketed him. He feels guilt for winning the awful game that he doesn’t touch the money for over a year. When he does use it, he uses the money to keep for good things.

As s bastard son, Jon Snow doesn’t believe as though he belongs anywhere at first. Then, he finds himself in the Night’s Watch (where he becomes Lord commander after some time), back at Winterfell (where he’s named King of the North), and eventually at Daenerys side (where he discovers his true identity). He stays true to himself the entire series, with no desire to sit on the throne. This is where he most relates to Gi-Hub, choosing loved ones over money or power. And both of them are tested at extreme lengths to get there. Once everything is said and done, they both go back to the positions they began.

2 Kang Sae-byeok: Arya Stark

Squid Game & Their Game of Thrones Counterparts

Sae-byeok is strong and highly motivated. At first, she’s reclusive, unwilling to trust others, and relies on her skills. But she quickly becomes one of the most likable characters on Squid Game with her with the harrowing backstory of her parents being left behind in North Korea and her little brother living in an orphanage that she wants to support.

Similarly, Arya takes to the streets, living in hiding after being taken away from her brothers and witnessing her father’s execution. She doesn’t have anyone to trust and becomes closed off. After some time, she opens up to find herself and eventually avenge her family’s deaths. Arya even finds an unexpected friendship with The Hound when she least expects it, just as Sae-byeok does with Ji-yeong.

1 Oh Il-nam: Daenerys Targaryen

First presented as an older man with a brain tumor, Il-nam comes across as sweet and willing to enjoy the games as his death is inevitable. However, this perception completely changes when he’s revealed to be the mastermind behind the Squid Game. He becomes this wealthy man who killed hundreds of people because he was bored.

Similarly, Daenerys begins as a seemingly harmless girl who rises to power with her dragons. She earns thousands of loyal followers and fighters. But in pursuit of the throne, her paranoia of being overtaken and grief of many losses take over. Daenerys burns King’s Landing down. Despite good intentions, just like Il-nam, her actions result in tons of deaths. Her death is almost as poetic as Il-nam dying in a hospital bed, which is the exact opposite of what he wanted, to die in boredom.
