10 Adventures: Tales From Vader’s Castle – Issues 1-5 (2018)

While it’s a little whimsical in its nature due to the younger target audience, it also generates genuine moments of fear as this horror-esque anthology explores the ghosts of Sith history. Although Vader might be the titular protagonist, the arc spans across multiple eras, each featuring some of the beloved heroes that fans have come to expect. Writer Cavan Scott oversaw the piece with work from countless artists.

9 Darth Maul – Issues 1-5 (2017)

There hasn’t been a great deal of material on the Sith Apprentice Darth Maul ahead of his debut in the Star Wars timeline. Darth Maul aims to look at the events leading up to his emergence in the galaxy as the rageful son of Dathomir hopes to purchase and kill a Jedi slave.

The arc features well-known bounty hunters such as Cad Bane and Aurra Sing, but it ultimately aims to explore the psyche of this dark warrior. Maul completes his mission with malice across the arc, yet is stunned by the consequences of his actions and the lack of emotional completion that it gives him. It was written by Cullen Bunn with art from Luke Ross.

8 Lando – Issues 1-5 (2015)

Lando Calrissian is definitely a fan-favorite, but he had been absent from the big-screen sequels audiences were enjoying at the time of Marvel’s Lando release. The comic book arc allows readers to reconnect with this character as he portrays the main protagonist for the first time in Canon.

There’s an edge to this portrayal of the hero that perhaps might not be expected, but it goes a long way in fleshing out the businessman further and his time before becoming Baron Administrator of Cloud City. The heist of the Emperor’s ship is an intriguing premise for the comic, and the action only ramps up from there, presented beautifully by writer Charles Soule and artist Alex Maleev.

7 The High Republic: There Is No Fear – Issues 1-5 (2021)

Only those who have read the comics and novels will know of the great work being done in the new High Republic era of Star Wars. The first arc of The High Republic comic book title sees this new landscape set out in a unique way as the galaxy faces off against a new bio-threat.

Writer Cavan Scott and artist Ario Anindito introduce readers to a range of new Jedi, each of whom come across as genuinely compelling. The Padawan in training, Keeve Trennis, is a perfect protagonist to follow, with the internal conflicts of her Master Sskeer creating much-needed tension within the narrative.

6 Star Wars: Showdown On The Smuggler’s Moon – Issues 7-12 (2015)

Writer Jason Aaron and artists Simone Bianchi and Stuart Immonen have created one of the most memorable arcs from the main Star Wars comic run with Marvel. The introduction of Sana Starros is a crucial piece of modern history, with the character going on to be a big influence down the line and allowing for a greater emotional exploration of the galaxy’s famous smuggler.

The strange romance and marriage of Han Solo to this criminal is well-documented, but it provided a shock factor at the time that threw Solo’s relationship with Leia into chaos. This took place while the writers juggled a sub-plot that saw Luke lightsaber-less and testing his might against the forces of darkness that have sidetracked him from his exploration of the Coruscant Jedi Temple. There’s so much brilliant lore building going on here.

5 The Rise Of Kylo Ren – Issues 1-4 (2019-2020)

Fans were eager to find out how Kylo Ren found himself in the position of eventual Supreme Leader and what led to his formation of The Knights Of Ren, as well as his conflict with Luke Skywalker. The Rise Of Kylo Ren attempted to answer some of these huge questions.

Writer Charles Soule and artist Will Sliney tackled the character’s backstory head-on, giving readers some of Ren’s greatest development to date. While the arc is packed with action, it’s the shocking destruction of the Jedi Temple as well as the manipulation of Snoke himself that makes this tale so vital to the universe as a whole.

With the premise setting up the fact that, in some regions of the galaxy, Vader is a hero of the Empire, the story is turned on its head as his arc explores the impact that the Emporer’s right-hand-man truly has on the individuals that come into contact with him. An X-Wing pilot, an imperial worker, and even a love interest all have a part to play in telling the Sith story from new points of view.

3 Thrawn – Issues 1-6 (2016)

While fans may be awaiting a TV or movie adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars novel Thrawn, the comics have also attempted to take the story from the page and move it to a new medium. The Thrawn miniseries from writer Jody Houser and artist Luke Ross is a brilliant portrayal of the events of the novel.

It’s an arc that comic book fans have to check out, as Thrawn is introduced into the new Canon in a way that doesn’t lose his complexity or his difficult standing within the Empire as a whole. His move to the top might be a struggle, but it’s one that he shared with several surprising allies, each of whom gets their chance to shine here.

2 Darth Vader: Vader – Issues 1-6 (2015)

Comic book readers have become accustomed to Darth Vader boasting some of the best arcs in the medium, but the character’s main series started with a bang thanks to the introduction of a vital new character as well as an exploration of Vader’s past portrayed in a new light.

Doctor Aphra makes her impact known in Book I of the title, with the bizarre ‘friendship’ between the two echoing back to Anakin’s time with Ahsoka. What’s more, writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca worked hard to include flashbacks to Vader’s life before the armor and the Empire, giving nuance to scenes that could have lacked the depth needed for the character.

1 Dark Lord Of The Sith: Fortress Vader – Issues 19-25 (2018)

Charles Soule’s final arc of his Vader run utilized the fantastic art of Giuseppe Camuncoli, to revisit Vader’s fortress in a way that shows its incredibly strong ties to the Sith itself. It’s an emotional return for Vader, who almost treats the fortress as his place of birth.

Featuring duels with ghosts from the past and an encounter with a lost love that’s sure to have readers questioning the very fabric of Vader’s reality, the arc is both traumatic and spellbinding in its portrayal of what the former Jedi has become and how he comes to find his identity in a place of so much darkness.
