Star Wars: 10 Expanded Universe Characters Who Could Join the New Canon

Contents

With so many great characters from Star Wars’ Legends canon, it was difficult to choose, but here are 10 we’d like to one day see in the canon again.

Star Wars 10 Expanded Universe Characters Who Could Join the New Canon

It’s been an entire lifetime ago (or at least it’s felt like it) since it was announced that Disney bought Lucasfilm, and shelved the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now rebranded as “Legends”) in favor of making a more cohesive continuity for the series.

While a more concise continuity is certainly favorable (nothing like the whiplash of reading a book with references to the Clone Wars before the prequel trilogy was a twinkle in our eyes), it meant we had to part with a lot of great characters. However, there is a glimpse of hope: Lucasfilm has revived former “Legends” characters for new stories — and we have ten we would like to see again.

10 Darra Thel-Tanis

Arguably the lesser-known of this entire list, Darra was a recurring character in the series Jedi Quest and was created by author Jude Watson. Darra was a padawan who went on a few missions with Anakin and a group of their friends.

Tragically, in the final novel of the series, Darra was killed due to a faulty lightsaber and an unfortunate blaster bolt. Her death leads to their friend group splitting apart, marking a tragic end for the series. In the still expanding lore of the Jedi, it would be intriguing to see Darra back in canon — preferably without the fridging.

9 Lowbacca

Introduced in the Young Jedi Knights series, Lowbacca was Chewie’s Force-Sensitive nephew who moved to Yavin 4 to train under Luke Skywalker and befriended Jaina and Jacen Solo.

It would be easy for Lucasfilm to re-canonize Lowbacca when Solo: A Star Wars Story already gave us a glimpse at Chewie’s background. Thanks to Wookiees’ long lifespans, it wouldn’t take much to even include Lowbacca training during the prequels.

8 Siri Tachi

The padawan to Adi Gallia, Siri Tachi was a headstrong young woman who befriended and eventually fell in love with Obi-Wan Kenobi (who, apparently, has a thing for blondes).

Like Darra, Siri was unfortunately killed by a bounty hunter. In her final moments, Siri confessed her love for Obi-Wan and vice versa. We would love to Siri make a comeback to canon if only to flesh out more of Obi-Wan’s backstory, but this time we’re content they remain friends.

7 Mission Vao

A fourteen-year-old slicer (in non-Star Wars slang, that means hacking), Mission is one of the characters in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Mission had a positive and cheery attitude and was close friends with a Wookie named Zaalbar, and stood by and believed in Revan. Considering canon currently doesn’t have a lot for the days of the Old Republic (for now, anyway), there’s plenty of room to bring Mission and her friends back into canon.

6 Talon Karrde

Introduced in the Thrawn Trilogy, Talon was one of the more honorable scoundrels in the galaxy and often lent his helping hand to others (including rescuing Luke Skywalker).

Talon valued information and organized the Smuggler’s Alliance to help the Republic against Thrawn’s brutal attacks. Talon is an interesting breed of smuggler, one we haven’t seen enough of in canon, and it would be a wonder to see him brought to life again.

5 Tenel Ka Djo

Like Lowbacca, Tenel Ka initially appeared in the Young Jedi Knights series. In them, she favored her own natural talents and physical prowess over-relying overtly on the Force out of pride. Tenel Ka eventually learned to trust more in the Force after an accident with her first built Lightsaber that ended with Tenel Ka losing one of her arms, due to a faulty lightsaber she quickly and incorrectly built.

Tenel Ka was the heir of the Hapes Consortium, making her royalty. However, Tenel preferred the Dathomiri culture of her mother over her father’s but eventually found pride in both. Tenel Ka followed the path of the Jedi until she became Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium. We would love to see Tenel return to canon (bringing Hapes with her) because of how complex and interesting her character is, as well as the importance of having more disabled characters in the franchise.

4 Mara Jade

Once the Emperor’s Hand, Mara Jade became a smuggler that struggled with connecting to the Force, to a well-trained Jedi Knight. Mara was one of the most complex characters in the Legends continuity but was unfortunately eventually killed off aide cement her nephew Jacen Solo’s descent into darkness.

It wouldn’t be hard to integrate Mara into the new canon. The role of the Emperor’s Hand could easily be exchanged for an Inquisitor, and it would be interesting to see a former Dark Side user adjusting to life as a smuggler and healing from their past (preferably without dying).

3 Bastila Shan

Voiced by Jennifer Hale, Bastila was a Jedi Sentinel in the Knights of the Old Republic video games. She wielded a golden double-bladed lightsaber and had the ability to use the Force power battle meditation — a power that, apparently, boosted people’s morale in battles.

Bastila’s a self-assured Jedi Knight with an interesting relationship with Revan — like Rey and Ben Solo, they shared a Force Bond. It would be a treasure to one day see Bastila back in canon, and to see her relationship with Revan explored (again).

2 Galen Marek

Galen Marek is probably better known as his Dark Side persona, Starkiller (yes, like the one that destroyed the New Republic in The Force Awakens). Galen was the lead protagonist of the 2008 video game, The Force Unleashed.

Galen was Vader’s secret apprentice who eventually turned to the side of the Light, and played an important role in the creation of the Rebel Alliance — enough so that after his death, Leia and Bail decided to make the emblem of the Rebellion the Marek family crest.

1 Jaina Solo

With the end of the Skywalker Saga already in theaters, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll ever seen Jaina Solo in the new canon — at least, in her current form. Part of Jaina’s draw is certainly her connection with the Skywalker-Solo Family, as it’s a huge part of her character, but the archetype that Jaina stands for would be interesting to see played out on screen.

Jaina was a pilot in Rogue Squadron, a leader, and a cunning warrior. She had her father’s mouth and her mother’s stubbornness and was given the title of being the Sword of the Jedi — which is such a cool title and role that we would love to see it on screen.
