Two of Star Wars’ greatest ever projects in any medium are The Clone Wars and Rebels, with both these animated shows adding so much to the franchise. One of the most significant ways these shows add to the canon is through their catalog of characters, not least of all the epic central villains who add so much to each series, most of whom are complete badasses.

With their fantastic animation look and great writing, both animated shows have main, recurring villains who are both easy to hate as opponents to the heroes, as well as easy to love as insanely cool bad guys.

10 Ziro The Hutt

One of the villains of The Clone Wars movie and a member of the famous Hutt clan who pops up throughout the series before his death, Ziro the Hutt is arguably one of the most annoying characters in the show.

Hutts, in general, are not the coolest species in Star Wars. They’re slimy, disgusting, and not at all badass, but Hutts are still a great addition to the Galaxy. Ziro is as lame as it gets for recurring Star Wars animated villains, as he’s hatable to the younger audience, irritating to the older.

9 Boba Fett

Boba Fett has notoriously been one of the most badass Star Wars characters across a slew of content in the franchise, most recently being an incredible addition to The Mandalorian.

In The Clone Wars, though, Boba is still only a child. He is suffering from his father’s death and is not fully used to the whole cold-blooded killer world of bounty hunting at this point. He is still a good villain with a couple of phenomenal appearances on the show, but there are many cooler villains throughout both animated shows.

8 Savage Opress

Savage Opress was a solid addition to The Clone Wars’ rogue’s gallery, giving audiences some great and badass moments and being a great part of Maul’s initial arc as he rises to the ruler of Mandalore.

He is an unrefined brute but a mighty one. His brother, though, is far cooler, and as far as ‘apprentices’ go in the show, Savage is one of the weakest and, while a really good part of the show, does not live up to the coolness of other villains.

7 Mother Talzin

Mother Talzin is a fascinating villain given the lack of exploration magick has gotten within Star Wars in comparison to other phenomena like the Force. She is also an extremely creepy villain who offers a lot to Asajj Ventress’s journey in the series.

The intriguing nature of the character, along with the Nightsister clan she heads, is a big part of what makes her a quality character. She is extremely shrewd and intelligent, with a lot of ambition. She also has a wildly creepy design and voice that makes her one of the show’s most unique villains, as well as one of its coolest.

6 The Grand Inquisitor

The central villain of Rebels’ inaugural season was the Grand Inquisitor, the highest-ranking member of the Inquisitorius under Darth Vader himself, and he proved to be a fantastic first villain for the heroes, especially Kanan.

Despite some of the unfair criticism Rebels has received for its animation style, his character design was pretty great. Jason Isaacs’ voice also adds an aura to the character, who is skillful, powerful, and extremely intelligent. In terms of death, he also has one of the coolest deaths, allowing himself to die to avoid the wrath of Vader; “Some things are far more frightening than death.”

5 Pre Viszla & Death Watch

Whenever Star Wars canon gets involved with Mandalore and the Mandalorians, it nearly always makes for some incredible content, from The Mandalorian to the various Clone Wars arcs all the way to Rebels.

Pre Viszla and Death Watch were the main Mandalorian villains of The Clone Wars. They have the unfair advantage of being a part of one of the coolest cultures in all of Star Wars, but that does not take away from excellent the group is. When Viszla wields the Darksaber, it is epic, and having characters like Bo-Katan Kryze there alongside wicked armor and iconic moments like Viszla’s duel with Maul only strengthens his and Death Watch’s case as being some of the best villains to walk through the show.

4 Cad Bane

One of the biggest fan-favorite criminals in all of Star Wars is Cad Bane, a character whose fate in the canon is not 100% known and who proved himself to be one of The Clone Wars’ best original characters time and time again.

Not only is he one of the most ferocious bounty hunters out there, but he is one of the most skilled, one-upping Jedi and the Republic time and time again. It is always a joy seeing him work, especially when he banters with heroes like Obi-Wan. He has such a distinct look and voice, Cad Bane is the complete animated bounty hunter package.

3 Asajj Ventres

Asajj Ventress is an original Clone Wars villain, debuting in the 2002 version of the show, immediately catching the attention of audiences who were jubilant to see she was to have a good role in the 3D version of the show.

Ventress has a really great arc throughout The Clone Wars, going from young a Force-sensitive to Sith Assassin to Nightsister to bounty hunter. Through all of it, she retains a lot of her ruthlessness, intelligence, and skill, which, coupled with her awesome design and chilling voice, makes her one of Star Wars’ best prequel era villains.

2 Grand Admiral Thrawn

Whether it is in the Legends timeline or his ongoing canon legacy, Thrawn has always been and will always be one of the coolest, most beloved villains in Star Wars.

Thrawn’s tactical and strategic genius is a huge part of his allure, then there is his superb look with his contrasting blue skin and red eyes, as well as the calm, sinister voice work of Lars Mikkelsen. He is the main antagonist of Rebels’ final two seasons and such a vital part of the high quality of those seasons.

1 Maul

Overall, of course, Darth Vader would take the top spot as the coolest Star Wars villain out there; how could he not. But, perhaps a close second in that regard, as well as arguably above Vader in terms of animated quality overall, is Maul.

His story across The Clone Wars and Rebels is just unbelievable. This was a character who looked impossible to bring back in any sort of sensical way, who burst back on the Star Wars scene to become one of its greatest characters ever, remembered more for simply one lightsaber duel. Sam Witwer’s voice coupled with the evolving yet iconic and classic design of the Dathomirian, along with all of the fantastic traits that make the character, make him undoubtedly the coolest animated Star Wars villain.
