Lightsaber fights are one of the many highlights of the Star Wars franchise, and everyone wishes they too could wield such a weapon. They’re beyond cool and have become one of the most iconic weapons in sci-fi history, bar none. Throughout the Star Wars movies, TV shows, and related spinoff material, lightsabers have become as common as hyperspace jumps.

Not all lightsaber fights are created equal, however; some will stand the test of time and live forever, while others suffered from a lack of foresight, planning, and imagination. Here are five that deserve repeated praise, along with five that would get any Jedi permanently exiled from the Order.

10 Will Live Forever: Yoda vs. Count Dooku

Episode II: Attack of the Clones was widely regarded as the worst of the prequel trilogy entries, and there were plenty of arguments as to why. Though the pitched battle in the final act of the film was a highlight, it wasn’t without its own controversies. Still, it did offer up one of the most memorable lightsaber duels of the franchise.

After easily besting Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in combat, Count Dooku is forced to square off against Master Yoda. It was the first time audiences ever saw Yoda wield a lightsaber, and his unorthodox fighting style more than made up for his diminutive size.

9 Should Go Away: Luke Skywalker vs. Kylo Ren

The Last Jedi was the most controversial of Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy, as not only did it upset long-term fans due to the mishandling of Luke Skywalker, but it was filled to the brim with plot hole after plot hole, ruining what could have been a tremendous second act.

Though Luke ends up redeeming himself in the final act, it’s not without controversy. He engages Kylo Ren on the planet Crait by drawing him down for a duel. Trouble is, Skywalker isn’t even there to partake in it. It’s all a Force illusion designed to buy time for an escape, which eventually—and controversially—cost the ex-series protagonist his life.

8 Will Live Forever: Ahsoka Tano vs. Darth Maul

The animated Clone Wars series suffered an abrupt end in 2014, shortly after the acquisition of Star Wars by Disney. Instead of continuing where the last season ended off, the decision was made to follow up with Star Wars: Rebels, which took place after the events of Revenge of the Sith.

In 2020, the series finally got its seventh and final season, which was designed to tie into the larger narrative. It pitted the Togruta ex-Jedi Ahsoka Tano against the dreaded Darth Maul in one of the most spectacular lightsaber fights in Star Wars. It was a huge step up for the series and remains one of the best animated fight scenes in the Star Wars saga.

7 Should Go Away: Count Dooku vs. Savage Opress & Asajj Ventress

This Clone Wars lightsaber duel is definitely one of the dumbest, and it ruined what could have been an excellent scene with a total lack of imagination and planning. Watching Ventress and Opress go up against the powerful Count should have been a scene for the ages, but there’s really nothing going on here.

Dooku spends most of his time fending off Ventress while keeping Savage Opress at bay with not one, not two, but a grand total of six Force lightning strikes, one after the other. Eventually, things take a turn when Opress becomes enraged and turns against Ventress, switching up the one against two formula in a silly way.

6 Will Live Forever: Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader, Round One

After the first lightsaber battle in the original Star Wars, fans were clamoring for a little payback. It would eventually come in The Empire Strikes Back when Luke Skywalker found himself forced to go up against his master’s killer, Darth Vader, for the first time. After training with Yoda in the ways of the Force, he left abruptly to rescue his friends on Bespin despite his master’s urging to reconsider.

Eventually, Luke squared off against Vader in the bowels of Cloud City. There, he honed his newfound Jedi abilities to combat the frightening Sith Lord who was secretly attempting to goad him into releasing his anger. It led to the single-most iconic moment in Star Wars history: a revelation that would change the story permanently.

5 Should Go Away: Rey & Kylo Ren vs. Snoke’s Guards

The Last Jedi did the unexpected by killing off the apparent main antagonist halfway through the trilogy. This, in turn, set up a fight scene that pitted Rey and Kylo together in what could have been a defining moment for the new Star Wars movies.

It should have been a scene for the ages, but it didn’t take long for Star Wars fans to begin picking the scene apart and ridiculing it for its poor choreography, and repeated viewings of the fight only make it worse.

4 Will Live Forever: Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Maul

The first Star Wars prequel may have been a let-down, but it wasn’t a complete loss. While the heavy-handed kiddie-friendly comedy and the weird story turned off many fans hoping for a glorious return to the franchise, they were introduced to one of the coolest Sith Lords in the Star Wars universe in Darth Maul.

This one saving grace came in the form of an absolutely spectacular fight between Maul and Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn. The frantic combat was lightyears beyond the lightsaber duels that preceded it and was made so much better with the inclusion of composer John Williams’ epic orchestral hit “Duel of the Fates.”

3 Should Go Away: Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader

This is a hard entry, but a necessary one. Let’s face it; the first lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader is one of the weakest. George Lucas can’t be faulted, as he was already working with a limited budget, a strained and stressful shooting schedule, and a franchise still trying hard to find its footing.

As such, the duel between David Prowse and Alec Guinness was shot without much in the way of choreography. Fans have attempted to explain it away as two old men well past their prime, duking it out one final time, but that theory doesn’t hold up in an era when 900-something-year-old Master Yoda is whirling around the screen and tackling Sith Lords like it’s a walk in the park.

2 Will Live Forever: Luke Skywalker vs. The Dark Troopers

After Star Wars fans cried foul over Disney’s treatment of the Luke Skywalker character in the prequel trilogy, Mandalorian chief Jon Favreau decided to do something about it. The final episode of the show’s second season showed a pivotal moment in the final act when a lone X-Wing arrives on Moff Gideon’s ship to answer a distress call.

From the first moment, fans perked up and stared at the screen as the buildup began. First, the figure cloaked in black. Then came the lightsaber strikes against Dark Troopers through a video camera. Then the gloved hand, and the green lightsaber. Luke Skywalker had returned, and Favreaux had showcased him as the Jedi Master fans always wanted to see. It became a phenomenon unto itself, and the subject of a myriad of YouTube reaction videos with fans tearing up emotionally. For many, this single scene was the closure they needed on the Luke Skywalker character.

1 Should Go Away: Anakin Skywalker vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi

The prequel trilogy had been building up to the climactic final battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin, and George Lucas was under a lot of pressure to deliver. Unfortunately, his attempt to go big ended up creating an overly bombastic fight that became its own undoing.

Arguments have been made in favor of this fight, but it’s obvious that there’s little going on. All emotion and power are stripped away in favor of the next choreographed sequence, creating a dull and hollow lightsaber fight that only comes alive when Obi-Wan delivers that final, fatal blow.
