Star Wars All 4 Lightsabers Rey Used In The Sequels (& When)

Which lightsabers does Rey use in the Star Wars sequel trilogy? For most Jedi, the lightsaber is a very personal weapon. Elegant and from a more civilized age it may be, but the lightsaber is also crucial to a padawan’s training. Constructing one’s own blade is an important test in the Force curriculum, requiring extensive Jedi knowledge and exquisite Force control to achieve. The Jedi bond with their lightsabers, creating a lineage that can span generations – unused weapons aren’t just thrown away, they’re preserved and passed on. After forging this connection, Jedi are loathe to switch lightsabers unless theirs in destroyed in battle or, for instance, lost in a planet made of clouds.

Luke Skywalker famously used his father’s blue lightsaber before constructing a green one of his own. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan wielded several lightsabers over the course of his years, and Anakin Skywalker possessed two blades as a Jedi before constructing his red Sith lightsaber. Of course, the heat of battle often dictates that Jedi must use whatever lightsaber they can get their hands on. For example, Obi-Wan Kenobi borrowed his deceased master’s lightsaber to defeat Darth Maul after his own was kicked into the abyss. Throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Daisy Ridley’s Rey goes through an impressive haul of 4 different lightsabers.

Rey’s Jedi training is tumultuous to say the least. First receiving a lightsaber without any real idea of how to use it, Rey is trained by Luke in The Last Jedi, only for her new master to sacrifice himself before the end credits. Leia picks up Rey’s mentoring in The Rise of Skywalker, but she too fails to see out the film. Ultimately, Rey is left to teach herself, similar to Luke in the original trilogy, and Ridley’s character further mirrors Hamill’s by eventually building a brand new weapon to call her own. Here are all the lightsabers Rey wields.

Anakin Skywalker’s Lightsaber

Anakin Skywalker’s second lightsaber is perhaps the most important item in the Star Wars franchise, certainly within the context of the Skywalker saga. Built after his first lightsaber was destroyed in Attack of the Clones (the irony of the “Obi Wan’s gonna kill me” line still stings), Anakin uses this weapon throughout The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith and keeps it even after turning to the dark side. There’s youngling blood on that blue blade. After being confiscated by Kenobi on Mustafar, this lightsaber is passed onto Anakin’s son, Luke, who uses it until his defeat on Cloud City. Somehow, Maz Kanata acquires the saber and yields it to Rey in The Force Awakens.

Although Finn has an unsuccessful crack at Anakin’s old lightsaber, Rey does finally claim it for herself at the end of The Force Awakens. After using it to defeat and scar Kylo Ren, the blue blade becomes Rey’s primary weapon through the Star Wars sequels. Even after the hilt is torn apart during a Force battle with Kylo Ren, Rey manages to repair the relic in time for The Rise of Skywalker – another Rian Johnson retcon from J.J. Abrams. The final outing for Anakin’s lightsaber comes against the Emperor on Exegol, after which Rey buries it within the sands of Tatooine. Anakin would be delighted that his former weapon is now covered in that coarse, rough, irritating sand that gets everywhere.

Leia Organa’s Lightsaber

Star Wars fans didn’t even know that Princess Leia possessed a lightsaber until The Rise of Skywalker. After Leia used the Force to Mary Poppins her way to safety in The Last Jedi, it became clear that the Princess’ affinity with the Force was far stronger than the original trilogy’s vague hints suggested. Developing Leia’s Force sensitivity further, The Rise of Skywalker uses digitally constructed flashbacks to reveal Luke Skywalker actually trained his sister. This continued until Leia sensed trouble ahead and hoped that giving up her Jedi training would avert a deadly fate for her son Ben. Luke kept Leia’s lightsaber, hoping to pass it on to a worthy recipient.

It’s the Force ghost of Luke Skywalker that gifts the Leia Organa lightsaber to Rey in The Rise of Skywalker. She carries it into the Battle of Exegol to face Palpatine, and this proves wise, as a redeemed Ben Solo soon arrives sans lightsaber. Rey uses the connection of the Force dyad to pass Anakin’s saber to Ben, while igniting Leia’s for herself. When Rey is left alone for the final stretch of the duel against Palpatine, she wields both Anakin’s and Leia’s blades to repel the Force lightning of Sidious, extinguishing him once and for all. Probably. Leia’s lightsaber is buried alongside Anakin’s on Tatooine.

Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber

Kylo Ren’s unique lightsaber was one of the big talking points when the trailer for The Force Awakens first arrived, triggering a wave of excitement over the Star Wars sequels. The menacing cross-guard design was striking, if highly impractical, and gave an early sense of Kylo Ren as a villain. The weapon was originally Ben Solo’s Jedi lightsaber, with a blue blade and a regular single blade rather than the cross-shaped red of Kylo. Following his turn to the dark side, Kylo switched out his sword’s blue Kyber crystal for a cracked red one, which resulted in the jagged shape of the blade and required the addition of two side outlets to prevent overheating.

Kylo Ren uses this lightsaber throughout the Star Wars sequels, right up until his battle with Rey on Kef Bir. The climax of the fight sees Kylo disarm his opponent and prepare the final blow, but Leia uses the last of her mental energy to speak to her son one final time through the Force. When a shocked Kylo Ren drops his lightsaber, Rey grabs the falling weapon and strikes Kylo straight through the torso, ending the fight. Kylo’s defeat, the death of his mother and Rey’s mercy all take their toll, forcing Kylo to wrestle with his allegiance to the dark side. In a symbolic act, his cross-guard lightsaber is tossed into the waves. Might the weapon be salvaged and wielded by a future Star Wars villain?

This isn’t the first occasion Rey wields Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. While held prisoner by Snoke in the Supremacy’s throne room during The Last Jedi, Rey uses the Force to seize Kylo’s saber from his hilt and charges towards the bathrobe-clad Supreme Leader ready to cut him down. She’s unsuccessful, and Kylo soon gets his weapon back.

Rey’s Yellow Lightsaber

Unlike most of her Jedi predecessors, none of Rey’s previous lightsabers were constructed by her personally. Anakin’s was passed on by Maz Kanata, Leia’s was given to her by Luke and Kylo’s was taken out of necessity mid-battle. Since everyone knows building a lightsaber is a rite of passage for any self-respecting Jedi, it made sense that The Rise of Skywalker would end with Rey igniting a lightsaber entirely of her own design, especially since she planned to bury the others.

The final scene of the Skywalker saga plays with the concept of honoring the past while moving confidently into the future. On one hand, the ending creates a sense of legacy when Rey adopts the Skywalker surname as her own, but she looks ahead by letting go of the old lightsabers and unveiling a brand new yellow-bladed one. The unique color perhaps symbolizes newness and a fresh start, while the hilt nods to Rey’s past as a scavenger, incorporating pieces of her old staff. Moving away from the traditional blue or green designs also helps differentiate Rey from her Jedi heritage (and lets Disney release a whole new batch of toys). The best example of yellow-bladed weapons in Jedi history comes from the sentinels of the Jedi Temple, possibly a coincidence but perhaps also an indication that Rey is now the sole guard of the Jedi faith in the Star Wars world.
