Star Wars: Battlefront 2 throws players into the midst of the epic galactic saga of either overthrowing a looming tyrannical dictatorship or establishing it across the franchise’s three trilogies. This guide will explain the game’s many modes and what to expect.

Released on November 17, 2017, by EA Dice, Star Wars Battlefront 2 has had a steady upbeat of updates and patches that have enhanced the game’s mechanics, as well as introducing new modes to give it longevity. Beyond the multiplayer component, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 featured a single-player campaign in which players experience the story of Iden Versio, a leader of the Empire’s special forces unit known as the “Inferno Squad”. The story spans 3 decades which ultimately leads to the events of Episode. VII after the battle of Jakku. Thus, there are also offline single-player modes that players can indulge in and set-up challenging customary scenarios and duke it out with their preferred alliances.

Of course, the meat and potatoes with the Battlefront franchise lie with the multiplayer modes. This installment has oodles to choose from and some servers will definitely be more populated than others. Although some of the game modes can be fairly straight forward, others are much more open-ended and can be blisteringly challenging, at times. Following the game’s latest update, the game modes available are; Capital Supremacy, Galatic Assault, Heros Vs. Villains, Hero Showdown, Starfighter Assualt, Hero Starfighters, Ewok Hunt, Extraction, Blast, Strike, Instant Action, Custom Arcade, Battle Scenarios, and even Co-op Missions. Some of the listed game modes can be vaguely similar between one another, but certain ones are also vastly different.

Game Modes Explained In Battlefront 2

There’s no doubt that the different modes have very distinct feels between them. Even though everyone has their preferences, the action across all these modes can get pretty thick. So, using the single-player content is an excellent way to hone the skills with all the characters and even experiment with different load-outs.

Single Player Content:

• Battle Scenarios – These are a pre-set of arcade-like sequences in which players take control of either light or dark side heroes. It spans across all eras as players play as; Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Rey, Han Solo, Chewie, etc. It comes with a timer and comes with a 3 Tier difficulty system. When all these scenarios are completed on the highest Tier, players will be rewarded with the bearded Han Solo skin from the game’s story mode.
• Custom Arcade – This is very similar to the ‘Battle Scenario’ game mode, however, players can freely make up their own encounters and set it up any way they want. The two main ways to play is either through the ‘onslaught’ or ‘team battle’ modes. The former consists of taking on hordes of the opposing forces as a lone wolf and the latter is about the player being accompanied by AI-controlled teammates. There are a certain number of enemies to kill (which can be customized) and their efficiency can even be increased. There’s a timer to mind and each kill will add a few seconds to the clock while deaths will reduce it.
• Instant Action – While this game comes with epic online modes such as ‘Capital Supremacy’, sometimes it can be hard to get on a server. So, in this case, ‘Instant Action’ can put players into this game mode and play alone while taking on AI-controlled bots across maps as; Kamino, Geonosis, Hoth, Yavin 4, Jakku and others. Players are tasked with taking over command posts that are placed in strategic locations across the map. Once players garner enough points, they’ll win the game. Everything can be customized such as; making the match as short (or long) as players wish, the number of enemies available, heroes being playable, etc.

Multiplayer Content:

• Extraction –  This game mode used to have its own page on the title screen, now it’s been lumped together with the ‘Strike’ game mode. So, now players will need to select the ‘Strike’ game mode on the title page and play a match (or two) then the game will shift over to ‘Extraction’. In any case, Extraction is about hauling cargo across a condensed map (such as Jabba’s Palace, for example) across various checkpoints. Meanwhile, the defense team needs to fight tooth and nail to keep the cargo from reaching its destination and make sure the timer runs out.
• Ewok Hunt –  This game mode introduces a little horror element to Star Wars: Battlefront 2. It’s deep in the night on Endor and it’s pitch black. Stormtroopers will need to trek across the woods armed with a flashlight and their E-11 rifles as they wait for the shuttle to arrive. The other side is Ewoks, armed with; spears, wisps, and battle horns. They can maneuver through the trees, using their tree huts like warp zones to zip around the map. Once they eliminate a stormtrooper, the player will respawn as an Ewok, gradually increasing their numbers while stormtroopers gradually become overwhelmed.
• Blast –  This is a standard deathmatch game type in which players will play as the Rebels/Galatic Republic/Resistance and the Empire/Separatists/First Order. Players will play across a myriad of maps across all eras and outwit each other with their skills with a blaster. Whoever reduces the opposing team’s headcount to zero wins.
• Strike –  This is a small team-based objective mode in which two teams of eight will need to complete a required objective. It’s sometimes similar to ‘Capture The Flag’ in which players will need to escort cargo to safety while the other team prevents it from reaching its destination. Thus, other times players will need to plant bombs and prevent the other team from disarming it. ‘Strike’ is alternated with the ‘Extraction’ game mode with every other match.
• Hero Starfighters – Star Wars: Battlefront 2 lets players unlock all the heroes and villains by a ‘Battle Point’ system that’s accumulated during matches. This also includes their starfighters, such as; The Millenium Falcon, Luke’s X-Wing, Slave I, etc. Hero Starfighters skips the ‘Battle Point’ situation and lets players take control of all the hero and villain ships at the start. One player will be selected as a target while their team defends them from the opposing team. This is in two teams of four and whoever destroys the most targets wins.
• Starfighter Assault – This mode enables players to battle each other in the cosmos in two teams of twelve. Thus, there are also twenty controlled AI-bots in the mix to heighten the action. Each map comes with specific goals, such as defending a Mon Calamari Star Cruiser or destroying the inner-core of a battle droid space station, among others.
• Hero Showdown –  In two versus two, players will challenge each other with their skills of a lightsaber (or blaster) in which whoever wins the first three matches first wins. Players can’t spam the same hero or villain either, they much chose a new character after each round.
• Co-Op Missions –  Four players team up and fight against an endless horde of AI-bots as they try to capture various segments across the map by locking down one out of three checkpoints in order to proceed to the next segment. There is standard infantry all over the place, plus there are also powerful reinforcements (such as vehicles) and even heroes to fight that are kind of like mini-bosses. Fighting across the entire map and locking down all segments wins the mission.
• Heroes Vs. Villians – This is a slug-fest of four versus four in which players can play their favorite character and see which side will remain triumphant. Each side starts with 35 lives and whoever reduces the number to zero wins. Players can respawn as a different character anytime during the match.
• Capital Supremacy – This game mode is widely considered the “main event” in Star Wars: Battlefront 2. This is basically a tug-of-war scenario in which two opposing forces must overtake posts and build up a meter (up to 100) that’ll signal a ship to extract the winning team to the Capital Ship that’s hovering above in the stratosphere. Once they enter the ship, the game shifts over to close-quarter combat in which there are two basic objectives. Breakthrough the main entrance, then destroy the inner-energy core. The invading team only has a certain number of soldiers that’s dependant on how many managed to board the extracting ship. If they fail, the battle starts over again on the ground level and both teams will need to compete for boarding on each other’s Capital Ships again.
• Galactic Assault – This game mode is also one of the most popular. Although, it’s fairly linear with its design it has some of the most content among all the other game modes. It’s a ground-based and objective-based mode in which two teams of 20 need to either attack or defend; vehicles, bases, or checkpoints across various maps. Players can unlock vehicles, reinforcements and even powerful characters to join in on the fun. There are maps that span across all eras and they all offer something slightly unique with their objectives.
