It’s been confirmed which Star Wars movie ships are included in The Rise of Skywalker’s final battle. In the film’s third act, Poe Dameron leads a ragtag Resistance group to Exegol in an attempt to defeat Emperor Palpatine once and for all. However, the heroes are drastically overmatched by the immense magnitude of the Final Order’s Sith fleet. When all hope seems lost, Lando Calrissian swoops in to save the day, assembling a makeshift navy of thousands of ships banding together to rally against the galaxy’s ultimate evil. This helps turn the tide in the battle and the Resistance pulls out the victory.

Even before The Rise of Skywalker opened, fans were analyzing this scene very carefully to look for any Easter eggs (a brief shot from the sequence was included in a trailer). Viewers spotted the Ghost from Star Wars Rebels, and Lucasfilm later revealed other animated series ships featured in the Battle of Exegol. But with The Rise of Skywalker marking the end of the Skywalker saga, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the filmmakers made sure to honor the franchise’s rich cinematic legacy in this epic battle as well.

A new video posted on io9 to promote The Rise of Skywalker’s upcoming home media release highlights the Battle of Exegol and the variety of ships people can spot. In regard to movie vehicles, there’s a Naboo starfighter from The Phantom Menace, the medical frigate seen in The Empire Strikes Back, a U-wing from Rogue One, and more. You can check out the video by clicking the link in the Tweet (which includes a GIF spotlighting the ships) below:

Despite drawing from the property’s extensive history to populate the Resistance’s fleet, the Rise of Skywalker visual effects team still had to create 55 new ships in order to meet director J.J. Abrams’ requirements for the scene. So, the end result offers a nice mix of old and new, drawing from the past while also giving viewers something fresh. That’s a great way to illustrate all corners of the galaxy uniting as one to fight the Final Order and the Sith. If the scene had consisted entirely of old ships fans had seen before, it probably wouldn’t have delivered the intended impact and felt relatively small in scale. By mixing these classic designs with new ones, Abrams and company were able to visualize the extraordinary breadth of the galaxy far, far away. The saga took audiences to several worlds, but there’s still much of the Star Wars universe it didn’t explore. Any new ships in The Rise of Skywalker represent those locations.

The Rise of Skywalker garnered mixed reactions upon its premiere last December, struggling somewhat with the task of tying up three trilogies in a satisfying manner. For all the divided opinions about the film’s merits, most would agree seeing Lando’s fleet save the day at the last minute was exciting and was a highlight of the movie. Lucasfilm took the opportunity to connect all corners of the Star Wars property, converting animated ships to live-action and bringing back old staples viewers hadn’t seen in decades. Knowing this was the Skywalker saga’s last hurrah, the visual effects team did the best they could to honor the Star Wars legacy.
