Star Wars Every Known Mandalorian Clan & House Explained

Disney+’s The Mandalorian has become one of the streaming service’s most popular original shows, bringing much attention to the world of Mandalore and its people. However, this isn’t the first time fans have seen into their world, as other Star Wars media explored the group and other Mandalorian characters before the show’s release. Here’s a brief look at the different Mandalorian houses and clans as well as some of the prominent figures in each.

House Vizsla

House Vizsla was a Mandalorian house composed of different clans including Clan Saxon and Clan Wren but ultimately led by Clan Vizsla. Tarre Vizsla is considered one of the most important members of House Vizsla, as he was the one who created the Darksaber — a weapon that allowed him to join the Jedi Order and allowed its wielder to unify and rule over the planet Mandalore. During the time of the Galactic Republic, the head of House Vizla, Pre, secretly led his own separate group called Death Watch in a secret alliance with Count Dooku.

House Kryze

House Kryze is the house of Duchess Satine Kryze, who played a large role in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. When first introduced, Satine was leading the Mandorlian government until it was overthrown by an insurrectionist group secretly aided by Darth Maul and Savage Opress. Satine was eventually executed by Maul and clan leadership transferred to her sister, Bo-Katan. Bo-Katan ended up driving Maul out of Mandalore with Jedi assistance before being proclaimed Regent of the planet. This rule was sadly short-lived, as Bo-Katan was then betrayed by Clan Saxon and called upon Rebel assistance to retake her planet.

House Kast

House Kast’s first and only appearance so far is in the 2017 Season 4 premiere of Star Wars Rebels, “Heroes of Mandalore.” The 2020 Star Wars Book eventually identified the house specifically. So far, only two Mandalorians, Rook Kast and Veraslayn Kast, have been identified as possible members, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Clan Wren

The most well-known member of Clan Wren is Sabine Wren, one of the main characters of Star Wars Rebels. Originally aligned with the Empire and Clan Saxon, Clan Wren was forced to cast Sabine out from her home planet when she spoke out against the Empire. Years later, Sabine returned with the Darksaber and convinced her family to stand against the Empire-backed Clan Saxon. After defeating Governor Gar Saxon and triggering another civil war, Clan Wren joined Bo-Katan and other clans in their struggle to drive out Clan Saxon. Sabine eventually defeated Gar’s brother, Tiber, and offered the Darksaber, and thus the role of leader, to Bo-Katan.

Clan Saxon

A Mandalorian clan of House Vizsla, Clan Saxon was in control of the planet Mandalore with the support of the Galactic Empire following the fall of the Republic and the Jedi Order. Gar Saxon served as Governor of Mandalore until he was betrayed and killed by Ursa Wren of Clan Wren. Gar’s brother, Tiber, inherited the governorship and ruled over Mandalore for a short time during the chaos following Gar’s death until he was defeated by Sabine Wren.

Clan Rook

Clan Rook was part of House Kast and, along with others, pledged allegiance to Bo-Katan following the Mandalorian Civil War. Clan Rook first appeared alongside House Kast in the premiere of Star Wars Rebels Season 4. Their armor is colored purple, yellow and silver and they share the same signet as House Kast.

Clan Awaud

Clan Awaud first appeared in the Friends Like These adventure book for Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game. This clan was led by Nam Beroya until his death when he was succeeded by his adopted daughter Vera Beroya. They led a battalion of 800 warriors from Vlemoth port and aligned themselves with the Resistance in their fight against the Empire. They split from Mandalore during the Clone Wars and are considered part of the splinter group, the “Old Mandalorians.”

Clan Eldar

Clan Eldar, much like Clan Rook, pledged themselves to Lady Bo-Katan Kryze following the fall of Tiber Saxon as Governor. Clan Eldar also joined the other similarly aligned Mandalorian clans and became part of the resistance against the Galactic Empire in the years to come. Members of Clan Eldar wear armor colored in black, green and orange.

Clan Mudhorn

Anyone who’s finished Season 1 of The Mandalorian is probably very familiar with Clan Mudhorn. This clan was formed unknowingly by Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin after encountering and rescuing Grogu, an infant creature whose species and origin are unknown. Grogu ended up using the Force and saving Din’s life from a mudhorn while the Mandolorian was hunting its eggs. Later while escaping remnants of the Empire, Din sought help from the Armorer, who gave Din a jetpack and engraved the signet of the mudhorn into his armor as a symbol of the bond formed between him and Grogu.
