Star Wars How Knights of the Old Republic 2 Depicts Mandalore

Mandalore is one of the most popular planets in Star Wars lore, especially now that the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, has become a hit TV show. Even before then, countless fans were intrigued by Boba Fett’s cool Mandalorian armor in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which has led a lot of books, comics, and games to explore the planet over the years. However, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords has a different take on Mandalore.

Developed by Obsidian and published by LucasArts, Knights of the Old Republic II, often called KOTOR 2, is an RPG that first appeared on the Xbox in 2004. The game came to PC the following year, and was a critical and commercial success. Taking place 4,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, KOTOR 2 is a darker sequel to BioWare’s original Knights of the Old Republic.

For Star Wars fans born during or after the prequel movies, it may be surprising that the concept of Mandalore existed long before the Clone Wars TV show canonized it in 2010. The planet appeared in Marvel’s Star Wars Legends (previously called the Extended Universe) as early as 1983, and it’s been mentioned in countless ancillary Star Wars media since then. Mandalore is also featured in Knights of the Old Republic 2, although not in the way some people might expect. In KOTOR 2, as in several times in Star Wars mythology, Mandalore is actually a title and character.

The Character Mandalore In Knights Of The Old Republic 2

Although the planet Mandalore was allegedly planned for Knights of the Old Republic 3, the project was cancelled. That means the only Mandalore to appear in KOTOR 2 is a character. Canderous Ordo is a Mandalorian soldier (and a companion in the first Knights Of The Old Republic) who fought against the Republic. Years later, Ordo is tasked by Revan with reuniting the Mandalorians, where Ordo gathers them on the planet Dxun. Because of this, Ordo takes on the title Mandalore the Preserver, a moniker that shows he’s the new leader of the gathering Mandalorian clans. He now wears the typical Mandalorian armor people expect to see in Star Wars.

Although Mandalore is a fan-favorite character, players cannot turn him into a Jedi in Knights of the Old Republic 2. Still, Mandalore the Preserver has a great story arc within the series, and based on the games’ story it definitely seemed like the next bit of Mandalore’s journey would take players to the planet Mandalore as well. Although KOTOR 3 was cancelled, rumors over the last few years have suggested BioWare may be working on a third entry again. However, nothing official has been announced.

Perhaps no planet and culture in Star Wars has been explored so thoroughly as Mandalore. Through numerous appearances in the Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows, the history of its people is continued to be explored in The Mandalorian on Disney+. If a follow-up to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 is in development, it will have to work hard to shed new light on the planet, but the return of the character Mandalore would surely be welcome.
