So often when the discussion is had about Star Wars on TV, The Clone Wars, or, due to its ongoing nature, The Mandalorian dominates the conversation about quality. Star Wars: Rebels, though, is severely underrated, and deserves its recognition as one of the finest pieces of content released during the new era of Star Wars.

Admittedly though, the show got off to a rocky start and was a significant departure in animation from what fans got used too. The first season was so often overly childish, hurting its quality for fans over the age of ten. Nevertheless, it still had some fantastic episodes and was a great starting point for more brilliance to come.

10 Worst – “Breaking Ranks” (7.5)

“Breaking Ranks” is one of those episodes that is by no means the worst that the show has to offer, but it certainly is far duller than most in the season.

It focuses on Ezra as he is on an undercover mission as an Imperial cadet to steal a decoder. It is hurt by the lack of other characters, although it does have some decent character work with Ezra and also with the two rogue cadets Zane and Jai.

9 Best – “Rise Of The Old Masters” (8.1)

“Rise Of The Old Masters” was probably the first great episode of the show, featuring the whole crew on a mission that affected the overall story.

It sees Kanan and Ezra lured by the Grand Inquisitor to the Spire on Stygeon Prime by way of having them believe Jedi Master Luminara Unduli is alive and could aid Kanan as he struggles to train Ezra, an essential aspect of the characters.

8 Worst – “Spark Of Rebellion” (7.5)

The series premiere of Rebels came in the form of “Spark Of The Rebellion,” an episode that, while not fantastic, kicks off the incredible show, and also had a lot of fans skeptical about the show’s quality.

The animation, lightsabers, Ezra, and the demographic of being for children, more than the usual level that Star Wars is, are all factors that hurt this episode to fans. The episode sees Ezra meet the crew of the Ghost, and helps them free Wookies from a Star Destroyer before eventually joining the team.

7 Best – “Gathering Forces” (8.2)

“Gathering Forces” sees the Ghost crew rescue Tseebo, a Rodian who knows the fate of Ezra’s parents, and flee from the Empire and the Grand Inquisitor. It is a really great episode overall.

The episode sees Ezra’s connection to the Force grow as Kanan pushes him to use his powers to bond with the Fyrnocks to help defend against the Imperial forces, something Ezra accomplishes by letting go of his fear and forgiving Tseebo for betraying his parents.

6 Worst – “Droids In Distress” (7.1)

Despite how iconic and brilliant they are, there is an argument to be had that R2-D2 and C-3PO appear too much and not used well, like Artoo in the sequel trilogy or solo episodes in The Clone Wars or both in Rogue One.

Their early appearance in Rebels is another that does nothing to really affect the story, something that should not be the case this early in a season. However, it does develop the brilliant friendship of Zeb and Ezra as the crew intercept an Imperial weapons shipment.

5 Best – “Call To Action” (8.4)

Another high-quality episode in the season, “Call To Action,” sees the Rebels gather some publicity within the Empire, prompting interference from Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin.

The Specters attempt to hack a transmissions tower to get a message out to the people of Lothal but must deal with the forces of the Empire and Tarkin. It seems the best episodes of the season have interactions between Kanan and the Grand Inquisitor.

4 Worst – “Out Of Darkness” (6.9)

The first Rebels episode to drop below 7.0 comes early on in “Out Of Darkness” that is hurt in a similar way to “Breaking Ranks” by not having other characters more and by not majorly affecting the story, something with which Rebels often struggles.

However, in a very positive and charming way, it highlights the relationship between Hera and Sabine as they get stranded on a supply run. It is very mother-daughter-esque and is the only truly good thing about the episode.

3 Best – “Path Of The Jedi” (8.5)

“Path Of The Jedi” really is a wonderful episode and gives a good glimpse into the future of the show in terms of the exploration of the Force, of Kanan as a Master, and the Jedi Temple.

It sees Kanan take Ezra to the Jedi Temple on Lothal to test how ready he is to become a Jedi. Ezra goes alone, faces his fears, encountering visions of the Grand Inquisitor, and in the end, gets a kyber crystal to create his unique lightsaber. On top of that, Kanan faces his fears of inadequacy, a familiar feeling for him throughout the show.

2 Worst – “Fighter Flight” (6.5)

By this time, three episodes in, Rebels seemed to be on a downwards trajectory, with this episode being the lowest of the early few episodes before “Rise Of The Old Masters” came.

“Fighter Flight” is another that focuses mainly on Zeb and Ezra but could have used other characters to boost it. It has the pair on a supply run, eventually stealing a TIE Fighter, and rescuing a family of farmers that Ezra knows who all are under Imperial arrest.

1 Best – “Fire Across The Galaxy” (9.3)

“Fire Across The Galaxy” solidified the fact that Rebels had the potential to be something outstanding, which it is. There were a series of great episodes throughout the season, but they were all topped off in the finale with this piece of brilliance.

It has the crew on a mission to rescue Kanan from the Grand Inquisitor, resulting in an epic duel between Kanan and Ezra and the Grand Inquisitor in which Kanan lets go of his fear, believes in the Force, and defeats the Inquisitor. “Some things are far more frightening than death” is a chilling quote to end the season, and tease the events to come with Darth Vader and the returning Ahsoka.
