Star Wars Reveals the True Power of Luke Skywalkers Yellow Lightsaber

The color of a lightsaber’s blade is not some random, side issue in Star Wars. The color has meaning. There is a specific reason why Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine wield lightsabers with red blades, and why Yoda’s was green. So, when Luke Skywalker is shown to be using a yellow-bladed lightsaber, as he did in Star War #6, it is normal for fans to sit up and ask what is the significance of his choice of colors?

The color of the lightsaber a wielder used signified their classification. For example, those who wielded blue lightsabers, such as Anakin Skywalker classified themselves as guardians or members of the military wing of the Jedi Order. Luke’s first lightsaber was blue, as it was the lightsaber his father used before his turn to the Dark Side. On the other hand, green lightsaber wielders such as Yoda are consulars so were generally focused on things like negotiations and diplomatic missions. Considering Luke’s later focus on building a new Jedi Order as opposed to being a fighter, his change from blue lightsaber to green makes sense.

This all leaves Luke’s yellow Lightsaber in an odd place. Since its first appearance, fans were left to ponder this question on their own. However, a massive clue is given in Star Wars #19. Indeed, in the comic, readers find Luke attending a status-strategy meeting of reunited Rebel forces that were scattered after the battle of Hoth. Leia, who is also in attendance, asks Luke why he’s so unfocused. Luke confesses that despite his desire to help the Rebels in the present, he cannot overcome the belief that he needs to first finish his training. Under Luke’s analysis, the Rebellion will only succeed when Darth Vader is defeated, and since he’s the only one who can accomplish this, he needs to prepare himself sooner rather than later.

Leia comforts him and agrees that he should first focus on his training. Indeed, the only other time she has seen Luke believe so strongly in an action was when he took off to search and retrieval the yellow lightsaber he presently holds. Since his retrieval of the yellow lightsaber provided an act that rebels could and did rally around, Leia’s comment suggests that she believes his desire to focus on his training may result in a similar benefit for the Rebellion.

The obvious takeaway from this exchange is that the power of the yellow lightsaber, is neither focused on the martial abilities of the guardians, nor the diplomatic skills of consulars, but rather on characteristics such as protection, service, balance, and hope. As such, it seems appropriate that when the Star Wars universe is most in need of a hero, Luke Skywalker best fits the role, and there was no better way to express this than by using a yellow lightsaber.
