Star Wars is one, big story, famously told entirely out of order. Rogue One is the standalone film that bridges the gap between the prequels and the original trilogy, as well as connecting characters and storylines from animated shows like Star Wars: Rebels and The Clone Wars. Though it serves to “fill in the blanks”, there is still so much that isn’t covered in the movie itself.

Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel is a prequel that focuses primarily around the pasts of Galen and Lyra Erso, and their connections to the sinister Director Krennic. The Rogue One novelization is also an excellent companion to the film for the fans that are eager to learn more. Let’s take a look at 10 details about Rogue One that you wouldn’t know if you have only watched the movie.

Galen Erso and Orson Krennic are forever at odds in Rogue One, but the prequel novel reveals that they were once the best of friends.

Orson is accepted into the Galactic Republic’s Futures Program for gifted students when he is only 15 years-old, and there he meets Galen Erso – a brilliant but socially awkward teen prodigy. Though Galen is a bit older than him, Orson often defends him against bullies, and their close-knit friendship continues into adulthood.

The Clone Wars reveals that though Saw’s rebels were determined, they were in desperate need of training. The Jedi Order refused to become directly involved, but allowed Anakin Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and Rex, to help train Saw’s resistance.

8 Lyra Erso Was Almost A Jedi

Lyra Erso may not have the same scientific mind as her husband, but she is an intellectual in her own right. She has an ear for languages, and she is a skilled explorer and cave system guide. She is also deeply spiritual. She spent her free time studying Jedi history and philosophies.

Though she is not able to tap into the Force herself, she found it a comfort, and believed strongly that she could feel it flow around her in sacred places. The original draft of the script toyed with the idea of Lyra being a Jedi, but it was eventually scrapped.

7 Jyn Erso Was Born In A Prison

During her pregnancy, Lyra and Galen are both captured and imprisoned as traitors on falsified espionage charges. They are held in separate rooms amidst the investigation process, and only occasionally see each other over the course of many months.

Galen is permitted to be there for Jyn’s birth, but it isn’t until she is six months old that the Erso family is finally released from imprisonment, cleared of all charges by none other than Wilhuff Tarkin.

6 Director Krennic Was Hilariously Petty

Orson is overcome with jealousy once Lyra and Jyn enter into Galen’s life. He is used to being his priority, and always held a certain amount of control over him. That changes when Galen has a family. Orson responds to these feelings of jealousy by being openly spiteful.

He regularly attempts to intimidate Lyra, makes comments about their relationship, and purposely puts strain on their marriage. His most petty act may be that he pretends that he can never quite remember Jyn’s name, despite knowing her since she was a baby.

5 Galen Erso Was An Obsessive Workaholic

Galen is a scientific and mathematical genius, and the leading mind in the field of crystallography, specifically in regards to kyber crystals. The downside to his genius is that he throws himself into his work and becomes utterly obsessed.

Catalyst details times when Galen neglects basic needs like food and sleep, and hardly spends time with his wife and daughter for weeks on end. Ultimately, Lyra understands her husband, but his habits do cause tension in their marriage.

4 Saw Gerrera Taught Jyn Everything She Knew About War

Rogue One implies that Saw was a significant figure in Jyn’s life after the loss of her parents, until he abandons her when she is 16-year-old, but the comics and books go into more detail.

Jyn had barely arrived into his custody when she first became interested in learning to fight, just like her newfound, rebel father-figure. Saw taught her everything he knew. He trained her using old, broken droids for target practice, and used stormtrooper armor as dummies for hand-to-hand combat.

3 Why Director Krennic Landed So Far Away From Galen’s Farm

They may be old friends, but that doesn’t mean that Director Krennic trusts Galen completely when he raids the Erso farm on Lah’mu. The novelization states that Krennic assumed that Galen may have booby-trapped the surrounding area.

Ben Mendelsohn also had another theory. The actor stated that part of the reason why Krennic and his troopers landed his ship so far away was out of a sense of courtesy, to prove that he arrived there with good intentions. He also claims that Krennic genuinely did not intend for Lyra’s death to happen.

2 Galen Tricked Krennic Into Approving The Death Star’s Weakness

Galen Erso can’t get himself out of working on the Death Star, so he comes with the next best solution – the thermal exhaust port. Once a plot hole, the design flaw is cleared up with a comical plot twist. In a brilliant feat of reverse psychology, Galen sends a multitude of annoying, exhausting communications with a list of every pro and con to fixing a design problem.

Krennic becomes so frustrated with the constant stream of pointless “emails”, that he orders Galen to go with the cheapest and easiest option…which is exactly what Galen was hoping that he’d say.

1 Director Krennic Died Cursing Galen’s Name

Director Krennic dies alone on Scarif, but his final moments are explored further in the Rogue One novelization. “The Death Star, his Death Star, would alter star systems and civilizations, be remembered a thousand generations after Tarkin had been erased from history.”

Krennic is initially proud that his legacy will live on, until he realizes all at once that Galen has outsmarted him and built a flaw into the super-weapon. He dies “screaming in fury at Galen Erso, at Jyn Erso, at Wilhuff Tarkin, and at all the galaxy.”
