Lightsaber duels are a huge part of the Star Wars saga. Most are between a Jedi Knight and a Sith Lord, but a few epic duels have multiple opponents.

Lightsaber duels are one of the hallmarks of the Star Wars franchise. Inspired by the iconic swordfights in Kurosawa’s samurai classics, George Lucas gave the Jedi and the Sith laser-sword weapons to fight with. This setup has since formed the basis for some of the most exciting action in the entire saga.

These duels are usually fought between two opponents — typically a Jedi Knight and a Sith Lord — and the winner is determined when one triumphs over the other. But across the saga, a handful of duels have involved more than two people, making for a much more exhilarating fight.

10 Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar & Saesee Tiin Vs. Darth Sidious

On the one hand, it was pretty disappointing to see three Jedi Knights — including the legendary Kit Fisto — get slain in quick succession without putting up much of a fight. But on the other hand, it was awesome to finally see Darth Sidious in action, corkscrewing across his desk and effortlessly slaughtering Jedi.

After three of the four Jedi sent to arrest Palpatine are killed, Mace Windu manages to hold his own in a duel until Anakin shows up to choose his path.

9 Rey & Kylo Ren Vs. Snoke’s Praetorian Guards

When Rey arrives in Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room in The Last Jedi, it seems like the same setup as Return of the Jedi, with an evil emperor goading a powerful young Force user to fight his apprentice.

However, the scene takes an unexpected turn when Kylo Ren slices Snoke in half. Then, he and Rey take on Snoke’s Praetorian Guards in the movie’s most spectacular fight scene.

8 Ezra Bridger & Kanan Jarrus Vs. The Grand Inquisitor

In the season 1 finale of Rebels, right after Ezra Bridger has rescued Kanan Jarrus from the evil Grand Inquisitor, they run into the villain yet again and face him in a lightsaber duel.

When Kanan believes that the Inquisitor has killed Ezra, he takes up both lightsabers and unleashes a barrage of attacks on the notorious villain, eventually cutting his lightsaber in half and starting a fire underneath them. The Inquisitor hauntingly tells Kanan that there are fates worst than death before allowing himself to be engulfed in the flames.

7 Anakin Skywalker & Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Count Dooku

After getting their clocks cleaned by Count Dooku at the end of Attack of the Clones, Anakin and Obi-Wan faced him again in the opening act of Revenge of the Sith. While infiltrating a Separatist ship to free a supposedly kidnapped Palpatine, the two Jedi run afoul of the count and engage him in another duel.

Dooku manages to put Obi-Wan out of commission pretty quickly, but Anakin channels his rage and overpowers his opponent in no time. Prompted by Palpatine, Anakin ignores his Jedi training, kills Dooku, and enters the final stages of his turn to the dark side.

6 Rey & Finn Vs. Kylo Ren

It’s a shame that the sequel trilogy didn’t explore Finn’s Force sensitivity or his budding future as a Jedi, because it was clearly set up in The Force Awakens. While the Resistance is trying to blow up Starkiller Base, Rey and Finn are on the surface, fighting Kylo Ren.

Despite the fact that Rey is a skilled lightsaber user out of nowhere, this sequence is a dazzling display of intense fight choreography, breathtaking visuals, and lens flares.

5 The Battle Of Geonosis

Pretty much every Jedi Knight in the galaxy helped out in the Battle of Geonosis. Initially, the Separatists pit Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padmé against some monsters in a gladiatorial arena.

However, that arena is shortly populated with the whole Jedi Order. Then, just when the Jedi are losing, Yoda arrives with their new Clone Army to save the day.

4 Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi & Yoda Vs. Count Dooku

Anakin lets his emotions get the best of him when he and Obi-Wan confront Count Dooku and he rushes into combat with Darth Sidious’ latest apprentice. Dooku flexes his Force lightning and sends Anakin flying across the room.

Obi-Wan is then quickly defeated by Dooku, but hope is not lost for the Jedi as their Grand Master, Yoda, makes a triumphant appearance. This was the first time fans got to see young Yoda in action, and it didn’t disappoint.

3 Maul & Savage Opress Vs. Darth Sidious

Maul teamed up with his brother Savage Opress to take on his old master Palpatine in The Clone Wars episode “The Lawless.” Since Maul’s survival breaks the Sith’s “Rule of Two,” Palpatine flies off to Mandalore to find him and kill him.

When Palpatine finds Maul, he learns that his former apprentice still respects him, but the feeling isn’t mutual. Wielding two red lightsabers, Palpatine effortlessly kills Savage but spares Maul, claiming he has other plans for him.

2 Luke Skywalker Vs. Darth Vader & Emperor Palpatine

When Luke Skywalker arrives in the Emperor’s throne room, he initially refuses to fight Darth Vader. After finding out that Vader was a fallen Jedi — and his biological father — Luke was determined to bring him back to the light side of the Force. Palpatine does eventually get Luke to take up his lightsaber and battle Vader, then steps in with his Force lightning when he gets the better of him.

When Vader can’t stand to watch his son getting tortured anymore, he sacrifices his life to throw the Sith puppet-master who’s been manipulating him for years into the Death Star’s reactor.

1 Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Maul

This lightsaber duel determined Anakin’s fate, so it’s arguably the most important moment in the entire Star Wars saga. From the reveal of Darth Maul’s second lightsaber blade to Obi-Wan’s ultimate use of the high ground, this is a truly riveting sequence.

John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates” is one of his all-time greatest compositions, while Qui-Gon’s death stands among the most heartbreaking death scenes in the entire saga. The set-piece culminates in Obi-Wan becoming the first Jedi to defeat a Sith Lord in 1,000 years as he poetically bisects Maul with his fallen master’s weapon.
