One of the greatest things about hanging out in the Star Wars universe is catching sight of all those ships. There are a multitude of starships in Star Wars, and they each come with their own designation, classification, and level of awesomeness. The diversity in ships is astounding.
Plus, it truly is amazing how frightening some of these ships can come across based purely on their outline and their audible cues, let alone how they’re used in the story. The Star Wars universe houses the most interesting and shiver-inducing ships in the known fictional realms (take that Star Trek). Read on if you want to know about the most feared ships in a galaxy far, far away.
10 TIE Fighters
The “TIE” in TIE Fighters stands for “Twin Ion Engines.” With their distinct shapes, TIE Fighters are instantly recognizable. They don’t actually have much in terms of shielding, and you can tell how minimal their protection is based on how quickly they are brought down.
However, what they lack in defense they more than make up for in speed. These babies are fast. During the Battle of Yavin, they took down nearly all Rebel starfighters in a matter of seconds. Plus, the shrieking that accompanies their flight through space is enough to strike terror in anyone’s heart.
9 Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle
The Upsilon-class shuttle that Kylo Ren uses looks like a bat out of hell. It has a sleek design, with a V-shaped wing formation as it lands. The knowledge that Kylo Ren is aboard also increases the fright you feel when you see the approach of his command shuttle.
Can you remember what it was like watching The Force Awakens, when Kylo first appeared on Jakku? Night covered most of the shuttle’s features, but the glow of its landing lights and the dust it kicked up created a haunting atmosphere. It was a spine-tingling moment, that’s for sure. The addition of John Williams’ score helped increase the fright factor, too.
8 The Invisible Hand
Let’s not forget the prequels as we explore the most feared ships in Star Wars. During the space battle that raged over Coruscant in Revenge of the Sith, General Grievous’ dreadnought was a terror. The Invisible Hand held a massive contingent of Vulture droids on its surface. These Vulture droids would detach themselves if any starfighters got close enough and shoot at them.
Despite Greivous’ brief inclusion in the prequel trilogy, he was a force to be reckoned with during the Clone Wars. His harsh breathing and cold, yellow eyes inspired fear in the citizens of the Old Republic. His flagship produced the same reaction.
7 The Millennium Falcon
What, did you think we were just going to talk about ships the Rebels were afraid of? We’re being all-inclusive here. The Empire could be placed in a state of dismay at the sight of ships as well. More specifically, they probably learned to fear the Millennium Falcon.
The Falcon on its own is just a Corellian Light Freighter, but it accomplished many deeds against the Empire. It escaped from the first Death Star and assisted in its destruction. It out-maneuvered and evaded Imperial pursuers after the Battle of Hoth. The Falcon destroyed the second Death Star, too. Plus, who could forget it made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs?
6 Imperial Star Destroyer
The Imperial Star Destroyer was the first ship we learned to fear in Star Wars. At the beginning of the first film, Princess Leia’s small Corellian corvette attempts to flee from this massive, triangular starship as it bears down on her.
We learned to recognize the shapes of Imperial Star Destroyers. Whenever they appeared on the horizon (well, whatever counts as a horizon in space), we knew that trouble was bound to follow. When John Williams came up with the “Imperial March” (also known as Darth Vader’s theme), it was the perfect accompaniment to these floating giants in space.
5 Slave I
Boba Fett may not have received the amount of time a bounty hunter of his status deserved in the films, but his ship is still a fearsome sight. Called Slave I, Boba Fett’s ship must have been a bolt of terror to the chest for anyone with a bounty on their heads.
It is by far the most distinct-looking ship on this list. It almost looks as if a battle droid’s head has been glued onto an oval. Don’t let its slightly absurd shape fool you, though. This ship and its owner both mean business. Slave I possesses blaster cannons, laser cannons, proton torpedo tubes, seismic charges, and more.
4 X-Wing Starfighter
If X-Wings are not a source of trepidation for both Imperial and First Order forces, then they should be. They comprise the bulk of the Rebellion’s and the Resistance’s small fighters. X-Wings were used to bring down the mighty Death Star and Death Star II. While fans of Star Wars flock to purchase models of the X-Wing starfighter, they are fearsome ships within the fictional universe.
These fleet starfighters can keep up with a TIE fighter while simultaneously providing their pilots more shielding. X-Wings also come equipped with a hyperdrive, so they can make jumps to lightspeed if necessary.
3 Super Star Destroyer
Picture the Imperial Star Destroyer. Now multiply its size a billion times, and you’ll have the Super Star Destroyer. The perfect example of a Super Star Destroyer is the Executor, which functioned as Darth Vader’s personal Star Destroyer. It appears in Return of the Jedi. A
dmittedly, hearing that the Executor is Darth Vader’s ship is horrifying enough. But these titans of the galaxy could hold thousands of crew members, and their hulls were reinforced to such an extreme, it’s almost ridiculous. For weapons, these Super Star Destroyers contained ion cannons and turbolasers.
2 The Scimitar
The Scimitar was Darth Maul’s ship, the one he uses in The Phantom Menace to creep around the dunes of Tatooine. Darth Maul is, without a doubt, the best Star Wars villain from the prequels. It only makes sense for him to possess the scariest ship.
The Scimitar is also known as a Sith Infiltrator. See what we mean? Even the name of Maul’s ship is frightening as heck. It was an experimental type, complete with a cloaking device and hidden laser cannons. If only it had been used to more effect in The Phantom Menace!
1 The Supremacy
The giant ship from The Last Jedi was Supreme Leader Snoke’s personal flagship. It was called the Supremacy, and its size alone would cow the bravest Resistance fighter. The most terrifying aspect of the Supremacy is its ability to house a tracking device that can allow the First Order to follow other ships through lightspeed. You can’t get away from it!
The Supremacy is of the Mega-class Star Dreadnought type. While it is still classified as a ship, it’s basically the size of a small city. It can also house a number of transports and smaller starfighters, along with a huge crew.
