Statics New Costume Revealed By DC Comics

Virgil Hawkins is returning to the pages of comic books, as Static will be getting a brand-new look in his upcoming solo series. On Friday, DC Comics revealed a reboot for the iconic Milestone universe created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. In showcasing the upcoming digital-first series, DC Comics showed off Static’s new design, which takes the popular character into the modern era.

Milestone Media was created by McDuffie, Cowan, Davis, and Dingle in order to tell stories featuring minorities by minorities that weren’t being done at the time. DC Comics distributed a number of titles from Milestone, including the excellent Hardware, Icon, Blood Syndicate, Shadow Cabinet, and perhaps most famously, Static. Static told the story of Virgil Hawkins, a high school student who gained the powers to control electromagnetism after he was exposed to experimental chemicals. The series ran for years, with Static getting his own animated television series Static Shock, which aired on WB Kids for four seasons, starring Phil LaMarr. Static has since starred in a variety of DC team books, including Teen Titans, and had a short-lived solo title as part of DC’s The New 52 initiative. More recently, Michael B. Jordan revealed he was producing a new movie with WB and DC.

In DC’s announcement that Milestone would be getting new digital-first series, including Hardware and Icon & Rocket. They also revealed more details about the upcoming Static series – including a brand new look for Virgil. The new costume features a new hairstyle, a hood with a bill, as well as a yellow lighting bolt on his chest. The Nikolas Draper-Ivey character design image also shows off multiple hairstyles, his goggles, and a mask.

It’s a great look for Static. His old, cartoonish look is definitely iconic, but his new costume makes him look more modern while retaining cool elements from his previous looks. It will be exciting to see him back in action, as it’s been a while since readers have seen his Static saucers in action.

Solicits for the series reveal that the story will show what happens when Virgil gets his powers, but is caught between an overly-militarized police force as more black kids get their own abilities. It’s fair to assume the comic, like the previous run before it, will touch on relevant themes – such as race and police brutality.

In this monthly miniseries (20 pages per issue), bullied nerd Virgil is gifted with incredible electromagnetic powers in the wake of the Big Bang. Now he finds himself caught between an over-militarized police response to Black kids getting special abilities and some of those kids who are using those powers in dangerous and destructive ways. But when the bullies who terrorized him before the Big Bang show up with powers of their own, can Static be the hero that Dakota needs?

The Milestone universe returns on February 26, when the Milestone Returns #0 becomes available on February 26. Static will launch on April 12 on digital platforms – while later being released in physical format.
