Subnautica How to Find (& Kill) Reaper Leviathans

Being set on the mysterious alien planet of 4546B, Subnautica mixes survival elements with exploration as players set out to discover why their ship crashed. Dominated by water, the planet is filled with its own array of plants and animals—some of which are incredibly dangerous. One of those animals, the Reaper Leviathan, is infamous as being one of the more terrifying creatures in the entire game.

This infamy is particularly noteworthy since reapers can be encountered fairly early in any given playthrough. Knowing for ‘sneaking up’ on players trying to explore the more open areas of the game, these living sea monsters instantly inspire a feeling of awe and fear as they go about their lives as apex predators. As overachieving gamers, this naturally begs the question of if it can be killed or not. The answer to that question is a resounding “Yes”, but it isn’t exactly an easy thing to achieve.

Where to Find Reaper Leviathans in Subnautica

Due to their size, reaper leviathans reside in large areas with a lot of open space. This means they can reside in areas like the Crash Zone, Dunes, and Mountain biomes. But more often than not, it is the reapers who find the players and not the other way around. They use echolocation to find their prey and to get a feel for their surroundings. Meaning that when players start hearing the reaper’s distinct roars, the elongated creatures already know that the player is in the area. Their propensity to ambush players in open water is why the reapers have an infamous reputation in the first place.

But there is one notable way to safely locate reapers without being in bodily danger: camera drones. If players are able to build a base in or near one of the reaper leviathan’s habitats, players can use the scanner room to locate any nearby specimens. They will not only show up on the scanner room’s holographic map, but players can also use the camera drones to remotely observe its movements.

Prepare to Fight the Reaper Leviathan in Subnautica

It must be said that the game does not encourage combat with the reaper leviathans. For all intents and purposes, players are just supposed to run away and avoid the reapers. Not fight them. Other than providing the player bragging rights and an easy opportunity to scan them, killing a reaper leviathan does not really do anything. But that doesn’t stop players from wanting to kill one anyway.

Due to the player being at an obvious disadvantage, players need to do a decent amount of prep work before they actually try to start the fight. For starters, stock up on first aid kits. The reaper leviathan is likely going to land several attacks, and this will deal more than enough damage to kill the player several times over. Even if the player is wearing a reinforced dive suit, the damage received will be extensive.

It is also highly recommended to have a fully-charged seaglide for quick transport. It will be incredibly useful if players want to quickly approach the reaper or run away from one. The fight itself will take also take a long time, so players either need to have extra oxygen tanks on their person or have ready access to a vehicle. Keep in mind that the reaper will likely attack said vehicle, so it is highly advised that players upgrade their vehicle to have defensive modules in place.

For the actual fight itself, there are two main methods. The “Stasis Rifle and Blade” approach and the “Prawn Suit Drill” approach. The materials required should be self-explanatory, but just know that both methods will require the player to obtain some blueprints before being put into action.

Prawn Suit and Drill Arm in Subnautica

The prawn suit blueprints can be found in Aurora’s vehicle bay, and it is while attempting to acquire said blueprints that players will likely encounter their first reaper leviathan. They tend to patrol areas around the Aurora, so be prepared to engage in some evasive maneuvers before boarding. Blueprints for arm attachments like the drill arm can only be found in wrecks scattered throughout the map. Try looking inside of wrecks located in the Dunes, Blood Kelp Trench, and Grand Reef area. Odds are good that the player may come across the drill arm and grappling arm upgrades, both of which are must-haves if players want to fight the reaper leviathan using this method.

Once the prawn suit is built, bring it to a base with a vehicle bay so it can be upgraded. Add a few hull enforcement upgrades and affix a drill arm and a grapple arm to the prawn suit. Once that’s done, enter the suit and find a reaper leviathan to fight. Be sure to bring along a repair tool, as it is almost guaranteed that players will need to repair their prawn suit mid-fight.

The tactics of fighting the reaper are fairly simple. Use the grapple arm to get close to the beast and use the drill arm to inflict damage continuously. Sounds simple enough, right? Unfortunately, reapers have a really high health pool. Meaning that even if the prawn suit isn’t attacked, players will still need to continue attacking with the drill arm for several minutes before the reaper finally keels over.

But it is likely that regardless of how the player grapples, the reaper will probably be able to twist around and attack the prawn suit. If the player has added in a few hull upgrades, this shouldn’t instantly result in the suit’s destruction but players should be ready to run away if the prawn suit is compromised.

Continue with the grapple-n-drill method until the reaper flips over dead.

Stasis Rifle and Blade in Subnautica

This is the preferred method of taking down the reaper due to its high damage output but is definitely the more nerve-wracking method since it requires the player to fight the reaper in person. Players will first need to find a blueprint for a stasis rifle. They can found in wrecks or debris within the Bulb Zone, Safe Shallows, and Kelp Forest. This weapon will create a force field of sorts that will keep the reaper in place if it makes contact.

Knives are a simple weapon that players obtain near the start of the game, but players are encouraged to upgrade that survival knife into a thermoblade as soon as possible to increase its damage output. The blueprints for the upgrade station, like most other blueprint locations in this guide, can be found in wrecks. Try searching areas like the Bulb Zone, Mushroom Forest, and the Mountains.

With a stasis rifle and knife in hand, it is time to confront the beast. Charge up the stasis rifle and aim at the reaper’s head. If this shot hits, an orb of blueish light should erupt around the head and halt the reaper in its tracks. Completely vulnerable. While it is immobilized, players should approach the reaper’s head or front fins and begin slicing away at its health pool. Trying to attack any other part of the reaper will have no effect.

When players begin to see the stasis rifle bubble shrinking or flickering, they need to back off and shoot another changed stasis rifle shot at the head to keep the reaper in place. Then go back to stabbing at it. If players continue this process, the imposing leviathan should be killed off after several minutes of hacking and slashing.
