Succession Season 3 What Josh Meeting Stewy Means For The Roys

Succession season 3 has already featured plenty of developments in the business feud between Kendall and Logan, but here’s what the latest episode’s meeting between Josh and Stewy means for the Roys overall. The HBO dramedy has been brutal in how its characters treat each other since it first debuted in 2018, with business-related and personal dealings that consistently leave viewers walking away from an episode with their stomachs in knots. Now, as many of the show’s slow-burn, building pressure points finally boil over, one of the most glaring questions left up in the air is how the Roy family and Waystar Royco will fare now that both are imbued with deep conflict and scandal.

Succession follows founder/CEO Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the ultra-wealthy head of an enormous media conglomerate named Waystar Royco, and his four adult children. Growing older and frailer by the day, the titular concept of succession has always been seemingly inevitable within the series. However, that hasn’t stopped Logan from refusing to truly hand over the company’s reigns or any of his kids from manipulating and backstabbing in pursuit of their own personal end games. In season 3, episode 4, “Lion in the Meadow,” the cracks within Waystar Royco – many of which have only been intensified by the father-son feud between Logan and his son, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) – are more apparent than ever.

Granted, both characters have to feign being a semi-united front when they rendezvous with company shareholder Josh Aaronson (Adrien Brody) to keep him on their side – despite recent PR turbulence – for Waystar’s upcoming shareholders’ meeting. Of course, after Logan’s health scare by the ocean at Josh’s compound, the latter character can be seen meeting with current Roy-enemy-investor Stewy Hosseini. At the end of the Succession season 3 episode, Roman relays this information to Kendall, along with how Josh has now said he has “zero faith in the post-dad leadership” of the company, and both take it as a clear sign that he’s decided to turn against them. Most likely, Josh is indeed switching over to Stewy’s side, and this decision seems to be a symbolic development for where things are going for Waystar and the Roys overall. Whether Logan or Kendall wins out in their feud, the company has still received some irreparable damage from both its now-public internal conflict and its ongoing cruise line-related media/legal scandal.

As Succession’s show title implies, inevitable change and shifts in power are integral plot elements. There’s only so long a family made up of completely toxic, self-serving people can work together in what appears to be relative harmony from the outside. In addition, there’s only so long a company, even a lucrative one the size of Waystar Royco, can hide amoral, corrupt practices like the ones used to cover up and silence the slew of cruise line-related sexual assault allegations that have finally boiled over into the public and judicial eye. Everything in the Roys’ world is on incredibly shaky ground, and, no matter the outcome of Kendall and Logan’s sparring and the company’s legal proceedings, nothing can be returned to what it once was.

The tide is changing in Succession season 3, and savvy business people like Josh are acutely aware of this. No matter what happens, things don’t look promising for the Roys on family or business levels. It’d be a long shot for any of the current circumstances to drastically improve. Logan’s health will likely continue to decline, Waystar will continue to have/experience even more turmoil, and key shareholders like Josh will keep looking elsewhere as they strategize with their fortunes.
