For what might be the first time ever, fans of both Lovecraftian horror and visual novel-style dating sims will be getting a mash-up of the two genres with an upcoming game entitled Sucker for Love: First Date. This game will be the next release from indie developer DreadXP, a studio best known for The Dread X Collection, a compilation of horror gaming experiences.

The dating sim genre is one that is starting to see something of a reconstruction; from the wildly experimental and unnerving Doki Doki Literature Club to the charming senior-centered Later Daters, dating sims are expanding beyond their initial promise of wish fulfillment and escapism. As a long-running niche genre of games, dating sims have cemented themselves as recognizable pieces of gaming media, and have set plenty of expectations that creative developers are more than ready to subvert.

It seems like Sucker for Love: First Date will be the next subversive entry into the world of dating sims, as reported by PC Gamer. Marketed as a traditionally presented visual novel-style game, Sucker for Love tasks players with romancing three different women: Estir, Ln’eta, and Nyanlathotep, all based after the H.P. Lovecraft monsters, Hastur, Cthulhu, and Nyarlathotep, respectively. Sucker for Love’s high-energy trailer, courtesy of developer DreadXP on YouTube, hints at the different personalities of these women and the conflicts they might pose for the player character. The game is set to launch on PC later this year.

Unlike more traditional horror games like the best-selling Resident Evil 7, Sucker for Love looks to be taking a more absurd, humorous approach to its scary and unsettling elements. It doesn’t look like the game will be shying away from more typically horrific elements, though, as inclusions like the translated notebook and some of the more eerie transformations of the player character indicate. The game’s combination of classic dating sim elements paired with traditional horror staples might just make for something wholly unique in gaming.

It will also be interesting to see how closely Sucker for Love adheres to its source material. In the reveal trailer, familiar terms like The Yellow King, Carcosa, and Cthulhu can be seen, but time will tell if their inclusion is merely referential or integral to the overall experience, making the game a strange sort of adaptation of Lovecraft’s work. Elements in games like Skyrim pull heavily from Lovecraft, so Sucker for Love would be far from the first game to borrow from the seminal horror author. Hopefully, this delightfully weird game can live up to its cosmic horror premise.
