The Suicide Squad writer and director James Gunn confirms Nathan Fillion’s Cory Pitzner, better known as T.D.K. or The Detachable Kid, is alive in the DC Extended Universe. Gunn’s soft reboot/sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad was released in theaters and on HBO Max earlier this year. The Suicide Squad sees the return of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang. The film also introduces a large roster of characters, most notably Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, John Cena’s Peacemaker, Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2, David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man, and Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark. Unfortunately, many characters never see the title card.

In The Suicide Squad, Waller dispatches two teams to the South American island of Corto Maltese to eliminate all traces of Project Starfish/Starro the Conqueror. That being said, Waller only expected the team led by Bloodsport to survive (at first). The other team is offered up as cannon fodder designed to distract the Corto Maltese military during the film’s explosive opening sequence. Among these supposed fatalities of this intense and gruesome scene is Fillion’s hilariously ineffectual warrior, The Detachable Kid.

Continuing his proclivity for interacting with fans on social media, Gunn recently responded to the theory that The Suicide Squad’s T.D.K. is still alive. Piggybacking off Gunn’s previous teases regarding T.D.K.’s life status, Gunn confirmed that Fillion’s character was indeed alive the last time audiences saw him. The tweet was in response to a fan saying “I’m sure a lot of people would like [to] see Nathan Fillion again,” and Gunn’s answer may hint at his eventual DCEU comeback. Check out the tweet below:

T.D.K.’s superhuman ability (or “power”) entails detaching his limbs and then controlling them independently of his body. This ability certainly warrants a laugh while watching The Suicide Squad and, in turn, results in his limbs being gunned down by the Corto Maltese military. After detaching his arms to mildly accost Corto Maltese soldiers, the limbs were ultimately defeated. Despite his limbs being separated from his body, T.D.K felt the pain of every bullet received by his floating arms. Naturally, fans believed he was one of Gunn’s many, many casualties. However, in the film, it’s ultimately made clear that T.D.K. is not marked dead in Waller’s communications hub.

The Suicide Squad’s mid- and post-credit scenes reveal that both Weasel and Peacemaker are still alive, and now it appears another fan favorite may have a future in the DCEU. In a way, this isn’t surprising as Fillion has been a “Where’s Waldo?”-esque collaborator of Gunn’s since first appearing in the 2006 horror-comedy Slither. Gunn is currently working on Marvel Studios’ Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and gearing up for HBO Max’s Peacemaker, which drops in January 2022. Following the finale entry in his Guardians trilogy, his focus will shift back to DC with Peacemaker and expanding the “Gunn-Verse.” The series is already expected to feature at least one surprise character from The Suicide Squad and, given this recent revelation, it’s highly possible that this may turnout to be Fillion’s T.D.K.
