Warning: contains spoilers for Superman ’78 #3!

DC’s Superman is best known for being incredibly strong, a dedicated superhero and friend, and perhaps most important of all, being an immigrant from another planet that has long since been destroyed. But at least in the continuity of Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman film, Krypton is alive and well, albeit held captive by sinister forces. In Superman ’78 #3, written by Robert Venditti with art by Wilfredo Torres and colors by Jordie Bellaire, the Christopher Reeve version of the Man of Steel finally comes home – but not by choice.

In Superman ’78, the story picks up immediately after the first film. The alien synthezoid Brainiac has descended to Earth with the desire to capture and catalogue Kal-El, as a Kryptonian is classified as an “invasive species” that could be harmful to the planet. Seeing the power of his foe and the devastation Brainiac’s already unleashed upon Metropolis, Superman willingly accompanies Brainiac to his ship orbiting the planet (while a truly jubilant Lex Luthor smiles from below).

To his horror, Superman realizes that Brainiac has captured thousands of beings – and even more surprisingly, has figured out a way to shrink their habitats so they could be better stored on his ship (which is already immense in size). Brainiac zaps Superman and seemingly vaporizes him, but Clark soon wakes up in an unfamiliar environment full of white, crystalline structures. Other beings in white robes emerge to greet him, and one in particular wears a familiar “S” shield on his chest. It’s Superman’s father, Jor-El (in the likeness of the late Marlon Brando), and Superman is finally home.

Superman 78 Brings A New Krypton Into The Original Movie Timeline

This is a shocking development for those who have seen the early Donner Superman films, especially the first. Superman has never visited Krypton and knows only slightly more about it than the average citizen does in the DC universe – that is to say, precious little. The 1978 film memorably did away with the classic 1960s Buck Rogers-esque designs of Krypton seen in the comics and favored a more stark, monochromatic design – perhaps indicative of the fact that Kryptonian science has stagnated in the Richard Donner universe and free thinkers like Jor-El are discredited and ridiculed.

Superman has travelled back in time to Krypton several times in the main DC continuity (though in all instances, Krypton could not be saved). The Christopher Reeve version of the character has never seen his home, and outside of conversations with the image of his father in the Fortress of Solitude, doesn’t even know what it looks like. Krypton is as alien to Superman as it is to the reader – and despite coming home, Clark is no closer to feeling like he belongs.
