Superman & Lois Sets Up A PostCrisis Alexander Luthor Twist

WARNING: This article includes a major spoiler from Superman & Lois season 1, episode 5 “The Best of Smallville.”

Superman & Lois reveals another huge twist to WolĂ© Parks’ Captain Luthor who is connected to another big Arrowverse character. While Supergirl has Jon Cryer playing Lex Luthor, Parks is portraying a new version of the iconic Superman foe. While Luthor is definitely after Kal-El, it may not be for the traditional reasons that he usually has against the Man of Steel. While little has been revealed thus far, this Luthor looks at Clark as a destroyer of worlds, as this new version comes from an Earth that had an evil Superman that supposedly destroyed their reality somehow.

So far, Superman & Lois’ Luthor has been established as a soldier from his world that also worked with General Sam Lane, hence why he pleaded with the Earth-Prime doppelgänger. However, that’s not his only relationship with someone in the Lane family as the episode “The Best of Smallville” introduces another dynamic. While posing as a freelance reporter, Luthor approaches Lois Lane and is trying to get into her good graces. Luthor tries to get close to Lois by offering to help her in taking down Morgan Edge while also not so subtly showing his Superman hatred. But the reason Luthor was going after her was shown in a brief flashback: on his Earth, Lois was his wife.

While little is revealed, the scene shows Captain Luthor and Lois saying goodbye before he went on a mission as she says “come back to me” before they kiss. Luthor explains to his A.I. that Earth-Prime’s Lois is just like his wife, only that she got married to Superman on this world. That makes Sam’s death on Luthor’s Earth even more impactful because that Superman murdered his father-in-law. It’s also why Luthor is emotional over seeing a version of Lois that is married to a version of the very man who destroyed his world.

Based on the fact that Luthor was married to Lois while his Superman was evil in their universe, this supports the idea of Parks’ character coming from a version of Earth-3. In the pre-Crisis Arrowverse, it was originally the home of Jay Garrick, but that has since been retconned since John Wesley Shipp’s character is being retroactively established as Earth-2’s Golden Age Flash on Stargirl. In the DC Multiverse, Earth-3 the designated home of the Crime Syndicate of America where the heroes are evil and the villains are good. In the comics, Alexander Luthor Jr. is Earth-3’s only survivor whose parents were Alexander Sr. and Lois Lane that died in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

This would make Parks’ character the Arrowverse’s version of Alexander Luthor Sr. or just Alexander to help differentiate him and Cryer’s Lex. While the previous teases have had similarities to Injustice, with the reveal that Alexander was married to Lois, the Arrowverse might be foreshadowing the Crime Syndicate. Superman & Lois could also be doing a combination of the two worlds thanks to Crisis on Infinite Earths. Thanks to the latest reveal on Superman & Lois, not only does Captain Luthor’s role get more compelling, but it might be teasing some incredible DC Comics concepts coming to life in the Arrowverse.
